Born in Windhoek and raised in Berseba, northwest of Keetmanshoop, Sebastiaan Meyer is a Namibian guide with deep roots in the landscapes he now proudly interprets. A natural lover of the outdoors from a young age, his connection to nature was shaped long before guiding became his profession — even during a brief (and ultimately unsuccessful) stint in Information Technology.
After qualifying as an IT technician, Sebastiaan realised that office walls were no match for wide horizons. The bush was calling — loudly.
In 2006, Sebastiaan’s path took a defining turn when he was selected as one of only eight candidates in a National Youth Council programme run in partnership with Wilderness Safaris. It marked the start of what has become a guiding career spanning nearly two decades.
He went on to guide across some of Namibia’s most remote and iconic regions, working at legendary properties including Kulala (Sossusvlei), Palmwag, Doro !Nawas, Lianshulu, Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp and Serra Cafema. Along the way, he contributed to the Children in the Wilderness programme and continued his professional development through NATH (Namibian Academy for Tourism and Hospitality), building both technical expertise and a deep respect for conservation.
In 2011, Sebastiaan broadened his hospitality experience at the opening of the Hilton Windhoek, later moving on to South African Airways, where he refined his understanding of international guests and world-class service. But by 2016, there was no denying it — as Sebastiaan puts it, “Guiding chose me.” He returned to the bush full-time as a freelance guide, leading safaris across Namibia and southern Africa with renewed purpose.
Sebastiaan believes great guiding is about connection — to nature, people and place. His guiding style is relaxed, insightful and quietly confident, blending storytelling with solid interpretation and an unwavering commitment to safety and guest wellbeing.
His areas of expertise include birding, geology and archaeology, and he is rarely seen without his binoculars, knowing that every drive holds the promise of discovery. A true conservationist at heart, Sebastiaan also deepened his knowledge during the global pandemic by studying Occupational Health and Safety, further strengthening his focus on responsible tourism.
Tracking a black rhino on foot for the first time — a moment he describes as pure wilderness and deep respect for one of Africa’s most iconic species.
When he’s not guiding, Sebastiaan enjoys time with his family — a grounding force that reflects the balance, patience and respect he brings to every safari. Confident, adaptable and warm, he is equally comfortable leading seasoned safari travellers or first-time visitors, always focused on creating meaningful, memorable journeys.
“The bush doesn’t give you what you want — it gives you what you need.”
