Onguma Trails

Onguma Trails

Brand new Namibian tour with choice of 2 or 3 nights

Be one of the first to experience Namibia’s newest walking trail. Launching in April 2025, Onguma gives you a great chance of getting up close with four of the big five (including lion, black rhino and leopard) on foot during an eco-friendly glamping trip into the wilds of the bush.

You’ll be exploring the Etosha National Park in northern Namibia, and there will only be a maximum of 8 guests on the trail at any one time, plus your tour guides and service and support staff of course.

Accommodation takes the form of a quartet of upmarket bell-shaped tents, inside of which each night of your adventure will be spent in comfort, thanks to the extra long beds, private wood-fired hot tub, and ensuite bathroom with hot bucket shower.

The tour is designed to leave the smallest possible footprint on the wilderness you’ll be exploring. The lighting and camera/phone charging facilities are solar powered, and even the toilets are biofriendly. Please note that there is no Wi-Fi or cell phone signal this far out into the bush, although your tour team will have access to satellite communication channels if required.

Day-to-day Itinerary

Please note that on the night before your walking trail begins, you will need to stay at one of the Onguma Lodges so you can reach the camp in time for the start of your expedition. Choose between The Fort, Camp Kala, Forest Camp, Tented Camp or Bush Camp (subject to availability).

The Two Day Experience

Day 1: After meeting your guide at the Onguma Forest Camp at 1pm, you’ll jump in a vehicle and head to the Trails Camp, where a tasty lunch will be served, setting you up for the rest of the day.

You can choose to fill that day with a guided afternoon walk or a sundowner drive – you’ll need to decide which between yourselves. Whatever option you all choose, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife and plant life aplenty. It’s likely you’ll return to camp for dinner with plenty of tales to tell and photos in your camera or phone that will wow everyone you show when you get back home.

After eating, you might fancy a spot of stargazing, or some relaxing on a hammock in the communal area, or perhaps to gather around the firepit. Board games are available to play too.

Day 2: Get those walking boots on after waking up and freshening up in your tent, as this day starts with a guided walk of 6 to 8 km. During this, your expert tracker will share tips and information on how to track animals and forage for edible food among the plant life. Expect to discover a few secrets about the Namibian bush too.

You’ll stop for breakfast during the walk in a spot that’ll let you soak up some impressive views as you eat. Time is sure to fly on this exciting and awe-inspiring trip, and before long it’ll be time to head back to camp for a late lunch. The rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish – perhaps relaxing in your tent before dinner is served in the open air boma. Many guests choose to take part in some stargazing after their meal. Or you might want to attend a presentation hosted by local researchers and conservation managers to learn more about the area’s flora, fauna, and sustainability drives.

Departure Day: After a second night in your tent, the following morning will start with a walk followed by breakfast, before you say your goodbyes. That’s unless you’ve taken the opportunity to book a third day…

The Three Day Experience

You’ll take part in the same itinerary for the first 2 days as detailed above, followed by:

Day 3: Your additional day of exploration can be spent on a 6 to 8km long guided walking safari along a riverbed. During this, you’ll build on the bush skills you’ve developed on the previous days and expand your knowledge of your surroundings. Alternatively, you can choose to get up early and head out into the bush on a Sunrise Drive with an experienced guide and ranger at the wheel.

Whichever option you choose, your third day will round off with a delicious three-course dinner in the evening before spending your last night as you wish – in the communal areas or in your private tent.

Departure Day: The following morning, an early morning walk will be followed by breakfast, with checkout at 11am.
