The “Canyon Rim to River Hike” is a 4 day hiking trail which takes you from the precipice into the belly of the Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa and one of Namibia’s most visited tourist attractions.
It’s a guided tour that negotiates some rough terrain as you make your way into the canyon (and back out again). It’s not for the faint-hearted and you’ll need to be fit (medical fitness certificate from your local GP is required). It’s an adventure for sure, but one so worth it. There’s nothing else quite like it.
It’s one thing to view the vastness of the canyon from above, it’s another to stand at the base and look up.
It’s hot in these parts, so it’s only possible in the cooler months of the year (April - September) and even then the permanent rock pools are a welcome delight. The scenery is out of this world, the sunsets spectacular and the brilliant night skies a marvel.

Over a delicious dinner you will meet your guide and discuss the details of the hike. Then retreat to your room for the night and get a good nights’ rest.

( 1 night )
Wake up, don your hiking boots and enjoy breakfast before you set-off. Hop on your open safari vehicle and make your way with your guide to the start of the trail.
An ominous name, the first stretch of the hike is called the “Jelly Legs” trail as you begin your descent. A 19km hike to a popular rock pool where you have some time to take a dip, put your feet up and enjoy your packed lunch.
Then you’re heading a further 6km, ascending to your camp for the night. Aptly named Camp Eternity with views that seem to never end, grab a well deserved cold drink and get settled. Discuss the activities of the hike for tomorrow over a hearty three-course meal under the stars. Retreat to your tent and rest up, tomorrow you are off to explore more of this incredible place.
( 1 night )
It’s an early rise for breakfast with that same incredible view and then descend back into the canyon. Todays hike is not nearly as long. Meander through the riverbeds for 6,7km to Mushroom Rock. Here you will take a break and enjoy your packed lunch before you continue the ascent to Camp Edge, a further 3,9km.
Enjoy refreshments on arrival in camp and the remainder of the day is at your own leisure, to siesta and to relax. The sundowner on the edge of the world (or at least the edge of the canyon) is spectacular and you are served a three-course meal again as night falls.
With nothing but the sounds of the wilderness around you, your head hits the pillow. Sweet dreams.
Awake for breakfast. If you’re up early enough, enjoy the sunrise as the colours change across the horizon and the warmth of day sets in.
It’s a 9.3km hike back to the lodge today. You’ll arrive back the lodge around 11:00am / 12:00pm. You can make use of the lodge facilities including a shower. Then get your things sorted and bid your guide farewell, you are off to your next destination.
