Tok Tokkie Trails

Tok Tokkie Trail outdoor bed setup, inviting under the starlit desert sky.

An exclusive 22km desert walking trail. Expertly guided and fully catered in small groups of 2-8 guests. You will walk 4-6 hours per day in terrain suitable for the fit and not-so-fit. Accommodation (your stretcher) is nothing fancy but you have a duvet and bed roll, warm water, bucket showers and a long drop toilet with the most impressive view you can imagine.

It isn’t about luxury comforts. It’s all about being immersed in nature in one of the most remote and beautiful places you’ll ever get to.

The scenery is incredible and the views are breathtaking. Everywhere you look could easily be the most beautiful setting you’ve ever seen. Red sand dunes beneath your feet and endless vistas aplenty. This is a special experience, a one-of-a-kind hiking trial like no other.

Day-to-day Itinerary

Day 1 & 2: NamibRand Nature Reserve

( 2 nights )

Day 1:

Arrive at the Tok Tokkie Trails base by 2pm. Pack your things (your luggage will be taken to your overnight camp by vehicle) and fill your water bottle. It’s time to lace up your hiking boots and set off. You’ll be taken to visit the Namibia Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET) to see how the reserve is involved in developing environmentally responsible Namibians. Then it’s a short scenic drive to the starting point of the trail.

Explore the rollings and dunes, the small wonders of the desert and the mystery of the fairy circles. It’s an easy 1 to 2 hour walk through open plains and smaller dunes to ease you into it before you reach your camp for the night - in the middle of nowhere. Enjoy a sundowner as the sun sets on the horizon. Ready yourself for dinner and then dine beneath the dark night skies that will leave you bewildered. This is hands down the most brilliant night sky in Namibia and around the world (you are in an International Dark Sky Museum after all). The best part: From your stretcher inside a fairy circle and with just your face peeping out from the warmth of your bedroll you can fall asleep watching the mesmerising skies above.

Day 2:

As the sun rises, you wake to a warm cup of tea or coffee and your day begins. It’s a light breakfast and then you are off before the heat of the day. It’s more endless plains and ochre sand dunes to take your breath away whilst you explore the wonder of life in the oldest desert in the world. This morning you will walk for 4 to 4,5 hours as you hike over a mountain saddle before descending into the dry riverbed. Stop at a shady spot for lunch and some time to relax and “siesta” during the heat of the day. Once the heat dissipates, you are off again and it’s a short 2 to 2.5 hour walk over the dunes to your camp for the night. The view at sunset is spectacular. Grab a sundowner drink and enjoy dinner beneath the starlit skies.

Day 3: NamibRand Reserve ( Departure / End of Tour )

As the sun comes up, the gentle light wakes you to coffee/ tea and breakfast before you’re off on the last stretch back to the base. It’s a 3 to 3.5 hour walk through dune fields covered in stubby grasses and scattered with acacias. On return to the farmhouse (around 11:30am), you can freshen up and bid your guide farewell. It’s time to leave the NamibRand Reserve and make your way to your next destination.
