The seven enormous tented suites fan out around a waterhole and the colours inside are an austere reflection of the natural surrounds: charcoal black, storm-cloud grey, fern green, linen white, natural stone... And they are comfortable with cotton draping, indoor and outdoor showers, twin stone basins and a private sitting area and verandah.
The main lodge has a pool and deck overlooking the waterhole. The lounge and dining area - done in the same style and with equal measure of elegance - is beneath stretched canvas with open sides barely keeping the encroaching bush at bay. No sacrifice on the African bush experience. No sacrifice on lavish comforts. You get the best of both worlds.
Game drives into Etosha National Park; Onguma sunrise and sunset drive on the private reserve; waterhole; Onkolo Hide; interpretive bush walks; bush dining and massage therapy.
The lodge is inside an excellent private reserve that shares its western boundary with Etosha National Park. Four of the fabled big five - lion, leopard, rhino, and elephant - roam the land and there are many species of plains game and birds to be seen on your daily game drives. The eastern gate into Etosha is also close by so you can add an extra game viewing dimension to your luxury safari.
Onguma aims to create meaningful and productive opportunities for the local community by integrating them into its operations. The primary goal is to provide jobs and income, not merely charity. To this end, Jan and Lizette Cronje launched the Oshivelo Farming project in August 2012. This 500-hectare vegetable farm, located near Etosha and Onguma, has grown from overgrown bush to become one of Namibia’s top vegetable producers, supplying major supermarkets and informal traders. Oshivelo Farming employs 180 permanent staff, with 80% being women, and up to 100 seasonal workers. Beyond creating jobs, the project supports the community by subsidizing vegetables, aiding local schools, and contributing to community infrastructure like a soccer field.
Onguma is deeply committed to conservation, evident in their operation of the Onguma Anti-Poaching Unit. This initiative plays a crucial role in safeguarding the endangered rhino population on the reserve. Since its launch, there has been a significant drop in rhino poaching, which is fantastic news!
