Set on a remote island and accessible only by air, Wilderness Jao Camp lies deep within the private Jao Reserve in the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Here, you’ll find a wide range of species, including the endangered sitatunga antelope, as well as thrilling predators such as lion and leopard.
The camp’s style blends avantgarde architectural design with wild wilderness. Tall timber, glass, steel and recycled materials combine to create a striking sculptural aesthetic.
Created across two levels, the main lodge features a lounge, library, and safari shop on the ground floor. From there, you’ll reach an expansive deck set around a firepit. A wooden staircase leads to the upper deck and another scenic lounge, bar and dining area.
In-between game drives and mokoro river excursions, cool off in the 2 plunge pools, connected to the main area by wooden walkways, enjoy a treatment at the world-class spa, and retreat to the bird’s nest-style gazebo on the edge of the water.
Raised wooden walkways link the living areas with the 5 suites and 2 villas. Each suite is spacious and open-plan: a lounge, bedroom, dressing area, and ensuite bath plus indoor and outdoor showers. Large glass doors open onto a private deck, a sala for lounging or siestas, and a private plunge pool. The villas elevate the experience further: featuring 2 identical tents each, connected by a lounge and dining area, they come with a private chef, butler service, and dedicated vehicle and guide – making them ideal for families or groups looking for total privacy.
Guests can dine in the main dining area, on their private deck, or, for those in villas, enjoy dedicated chef-prepared meals. For something special, opt for a dinner under the stars at the boma by firelight. Even more romantic is the star-bed sleep-out on raised platforms under a starry night-sky.

Experiences at Jao span both land and water – a hallmark of the Okavango’s magic. Guests can enjoy morning and evening game drives, seasonal mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions and boat safaris, guided walking safaris, night drives, catch-and-release fishing, and excellent birding. Tailored to children and teenagers, the Bush Buddy programme offers an exciting range of wildlife activities. For a bird’s eye view, helicopter safaris can also be booked.
