Joined by a wooden walkway, Tubu Tree and its smaller sister camp, Little Tubu, are two treetop hideaways in the 60,000 hectare Jao Reserve on Hunda Island, in the north-western Okavango Delta. With sweeping views over the area’s famously game-studded floodplain, the two wildlife sanctuaries offer an extraordinary wilderness experience – particularly to those looking for thrilling leopard, wild dog and lion sightings.
Guests don’t even have to leave the camp to spot prolific herds of game on the floodplains – elevated tents on raised platforms offer uninterrupted views, as well as easy access to a vast wilderness teeming with wildlife.
The main areas of both camps let the outside flow in, with raised lounges and al fresco dining on wooden decks. Tubu’s quirky bar is hand-carved from a large sausage tree and shaded by a tree canopy, with a walkway leading down to a small plunge pool and sundeck, and – just beyond – an atmospheric firepit. Little Tubu’s bar area is set into a large waterberry tree, with a firepit at ground level, and access to a secluded pool.
Continuing the tree-house theme, Tubu’s 8 and Little Tubu’s 3 tented chalets are accessed from the main areas along raised wooden walkways. Large and airy, the new design adds contemporary touches while paying homage to the camps’ history and surroundings.
