Just beyond the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta, Mokete occupies an exclusive 193-square-mile concession in the Mababe Depression – a remote area that captivates with a mix of savannah, woodlands and floodplains. Getting to the camp is no mean feat, and involves a flight from Maun or Kasane on a light aircraft, followed by a short helicopter trip.
It’s worth the effort for the thriving wildlife, including thousands of elephants, multiple lion prides and some of Africa’s largest buffalo herds. A sunken hide on the marsh makes for spectacular wildlife sightings, and there’s a real sense of being fully immersed in the bush.
The main camp features an open-air lounge, dining area, bar, pool, and fire pit. 9 oversized tents are spread out on either side, linked to the common area by raised boardwalks and overlooking the grasslands. Featuring pared-back interiors that highlight earth-toned colours, each tent comes with an elevated seating deck and a private plunge pool, as well as a living area and ensuite bathroom. While there’s no spa as such, a massage therapist offers blissful treatments in the comfort of your tent.
It’s important to note that all of Mokete’s activities are land-based. They’re also highly exclusive, as the concession is reserved for guests only. You’ll cover a vast territory on your daily game drives, in search of feline predators such as lions and cheetahs, the region’s famed elephants and stampeding buffalo herds. Night drives, guided walking safaris, nature walks, and bush lunches add another layer of excitement to proceedings – or book a helicopter flight for a spectacular bird’s eye view. While unpredictable, chances are high to witness action-packed sightings – this is wild Botswana at its most raw and authentic.
