The camp of the leopard – as Kaingo Camp is otherwise known - is a photographer’s dream. There are hides dotted about camp that will help you capture shots of elephant, hippo, bee-eaters and more. Much more.
Of course, you don’t have to be a snapper to enjoy staying here, as there’s plenty to ensure your comfort while keeping you entertained. But the owners are keen photographers themselves, evidenced by some of their work being on display across the chalets.
Part of the reason why wildlife is attracted to wander into this unfenced camp is the minimal impact the development has on its surroundings. Its design ensures the structures blend in, and there are no whirring generators to disturb the silence, as this is a camp run by solar power.
It’s also a camp that lets photographers send their pictures anywhere in the world in an instant, as Wi-Fi is available across the site, not something you get from many African safari destinations.
There are 5 brick and thatch chalets here, all built next to the Luangwa River to optimise views and close-up experiences with wildlife. They made the windows as big as possible when they designed these chalets, so you can take in panoramic views every time you look outside. You also get a kingsize bed to rest and recharge in, plus your own dining table and an outside bath on your private deck. You’ll definitely want binoculars and cameras at the ready as it’s from here that you can expect to see hippo, crocodile and elephant as well as various species of aquatic bird.
The camp’s layout ensures you get optimum privacy, as the walkways that link the accommodation to the communal central run behind the chalets. And there’s somewhere else you can stay at Kaingo - a deluxe suite known simply as the First House. More accurately, it’s the only house in camp, located furthest from the communal area, so that the couple or family of four who stay in here get the ultimate in luxury and privacy. The house is booked on an all-inclusive basis, and includes a butler, private car and private deck.
All guests are drawn toward the open-sided, central chitenge which features a dining area, library and, get this, a leadwood bar that’s reportedly fashioned from the trunk of a tree aged over 1,000 years old. Thankfully, it doesn’t take anywhere near as long to get served at the bar, as the team working across the camp are all motivated to provide an outstanding experience for guests.
Also in the chitenge, a lounge and dining area with a large table for communal eating, and an outside area where teas and coffee are served in the mornings, and a fire is lit in the evenings. A further deck is located under the chitenge, with sofas, chairs, books and a telescope.
Walks, drives, hides and sleep-outsGame drives, walking safaris and photo hide sessions are on the menu every day at Kaingo. Hippo, giraffe, zebra, lion and of course leopard are regularly sighted in the area, packs of wild dogs less so, but you could get lucky. Each drive will only have a maximum of 4 guests aboard the 4x4 vehicle.
You can also book a night in the Elephant Hide Star Bed, just a 2-minute drive out of camp. It’s a king size bed with wash basin on a platform built in the branches of an ebony tree. From up there, the views of stars above and the Luangwa River below are ones you’ll remember long after you return home. And you’ll likely hear the movement and calls of hippo and hyena as you snuggle up for the night.
