Located in a remote region of South Luangwa National Park, beside plains and a lagoon, yes, this is a camp that’s a great place to base yourself to see lion. And leopard, buffalo, elephant, wild dog and more. But it’s the lions that provide the mane attraction (no apologies for the pun) hence the camp’s name.
A refurbishment in 2018 means the camp is now more contemporary than its previous iteration, with more colour added to the décor of the accommodation, meaning it’s less rustic than it used to be.
There are 8 luxury lodge style suites and 2 deluxe suites in camp. All have canvas walls, a thatched roof and private veranda, and all are raised on stilts, which always improves wildlife viewing opportunities. Beds can be extra-long kingsize or twins, with the option to add a child’s bed. You’ll also have a separate seating area connecting to your private veranda.
Apparently, the difference between the luxury and deluxe options is that the latter offer more space and seclusion, hence the higher price tag. And they have an outside shower and bathtub.
Wooden walkways lead you from your suite to the main lodge where you’ll find refreshment and relaxation aplenty.
The camp team prides itself on the high standards of service, so whether you’re taking drinks in the bar, a meal in the dining area, a snack in the boma or deck, or time to relax in the lounge, expect to be well looked after.
There’s a swimming pool of course, handy when you need to cool off, plus a library and shop giving you somewhere out of the sun to which you can escape.
That lagoon is a big attraction for wildlife and the camp’s owners know it, hence it’s easy to find a space to sit and enjoy the views of the comings and goings in and around the water as you eat, drink and relax.
Game drives naturally top the list of most popular activities out of camp. With plains, woodland and rivers to explore, you’re sure to appreciate the expertise of the guides. Of the Big 5, only rhino isn’t seen in this area, but 4 out of 5 isn’t bad, is it? And sightings of giraffe, hippo, zebra, baboon and other wildlife should more than make up for no rhino.
You can also take a walking safari from camp, always a good chance to show your appreciation for the birds, insects and plants. Again, this will be led by an expert guide. As is a photographic safari, during which an expert snapper who’s a keen naturalist and lives in the area will help you capture amazing photos. There’s also a photography suite where you can edit your creations.
