You don’t need to stay in a big camp to see the Big 5. And this small camp in the 60,000 hectare Klaserie Private Nature Reserve in Greater Kruger National Park proves that. It is well placed to ensure you get the kind of animal sightings and interactions you’ll be telling friends and family about for years to come.
There are no fences between this reserve and the Kruger and Timbavati reserves. So animals get to roam freely (don’t worry, the camp itself is enclosed by electric fencing to keep you safe). More good news comes in the form of the fact that this part of the world enjoys a reputation of being the place from which white lion originate. It means your chances of spotting such rarities is that much higher.
As well as that, guests credit the Baobab team with the seemingly effortless way they are able to create a friendly, family focused atmosphere across the lodge. Of course, plenty of hard work goes into making things look so easy and feel so relaxed.
There are only 7 places to stay at Baobab, and between them they accommodate a guest list of just 16 people. All suites are separate, cottage-like units, and you can book the lot if you want exclusive use of the entire location.
All cottages are built on raised wooden decks, 6 of them being classed as 1-bed Superior Suites, the seventh known as the Family Suite. The main difference between them is that the family cottage has 2 ensuite bedrooms.
Inside each type of suite you’ll find an open plan layout with a lounge, bedroom with kingsize bed, and an ensuite bathroom with a tub that’s big enough for two. You also get a double wash basin, shower, bidet and WC - and a fridge which can be stocked with your favourite drinks on request
Outside, there’s a veranda that’s ideal for sitting out and exploring the bush through binoculars.
A short walk from the suites is the main lodge. Guests gravitate towards this area for meals in the dining room, drinks in the bar and relaxation in the lounge and TV room which receives satellite channels. Where you enjoy your food is flexible. Choose the dining room, or move outside into the boma or garden. The team can even arrange a treetop surprise for one of your meals.
The main lodge has terraces where you can sit and track the comings and goings at the small waterhole which is popular with all sorts of animals. For the humans, there’s a swimming pool and an open air boma with fireplace.
Being located in Kruger National Park means the Baobab team dedicate a lot of time and effort into making their twice daily game drives memorable experiences. They know that you want to see the Big 5, so you’ll have a friendly and knowledgeable tracker/ranger running things, using their experience and instinct to get you to the places in the bush where and when the best wildlife moments happen.
All-in all, you’ve a good chance of seeing all of the Big 5 plus a wide range of other wildlife, plant life, and birdlife. Complementing your game drive with a guided walking tour (also offered by the Baobab team) is the best way of ensuring you get to see the full variety of wildlife in the area.
