You’ll find this no-frills camp on Xobega Island, just off the mainland of Moremi Game Reserve. You can arrive at the reserve in a 4x4 or fly to Xakanaxa airstrip, before a boat transfer to the island’s wooden jetty.
Xobega Island Camp is unfenced, and shows the Okavango at its wildest – with hippos in charge of the surrounding waters, lions roaring across the Delta, and birds adding a natural soundtrack to the wildlife experience. Completely off-grid and solar-powered, the main area includes a dining tent with a coffee station and a long family-style dining table for guests to gather around. The open-air boma is located under the tree canopy, and offers a wonderful place to get together and share stories.
A lush tree-lined pathway leads to 10 simple Meru-style canvas tents, sleeping 2 guests each. Tents feature an ensuite open-air bathroom with bucket shower and an eco-friendly chemical toilet, with hot water available on request.
While there are no game drives available, short guided bush walks can be arranged. The main focus at the camp however are boating safaris, with twice-daily boat cruises around the Delta islands. A highlight of a stay here are the afternoon boat cruises, which include sundowners on the boat or on a remote island.
Go on morning and afternoon boat cruises to explore the hippo-filled channels, and observe Xobega Island’s most famous residents – Pel’s fishing owl. You also have the option of a romantic traditional mokoro boat safari at Mboma boat station, on transfers in and out of Xobega Island.
