This intimate lodge is set on a private stretch of the Klaserie River within the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve – part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem. The reserve is unfenced from Kruger National Park, allowing wildlife to roam freely – with sightings often happening from the comfort of your suite.
Kitara is designed in a classic safari style, with muted colours and high thatched ceilings offset by splashes of colour. The main lodge is an inviting space, featuring a comfortable lounge, dining area, and bar, all open to the surrounding bush. A wraparound deck overlooks the river - an ideal perch for armchair game viewing.
With only six spacious suites – each with a riverfront view, private verandah, and deep bathtub overlooking the bush – Kitara offers a sense of exclusivity and remoteness. The lodge caters to families with older children, as well as couples and honeymooners, and can also be booked on an exclusive-use basis for the most private of stays.
Days begin and end with expertly guided game drives in open vehicles – the lack of crowds will make you feel like you have the wilderness all to yourself. Time between drives is spent poolside, enjoying a massage in the privacy of your suite, or simply watching elephants meander down to the water’s edge. Dining is also a highlight: expect fresh, locally inspired cuisine, often served alfresco under the stars, around a fire in the boma.
Twice-daily game drives with experienced rangers and trackers offer opportunities to spot the Big Five and a wide range of other species, from wild dogs to hyenas. Kitara also offers guided bush walks for a more immersive look at the smaller details of the savannah, as well as birding – with the vibrant birdlife making this one of the highlights of a stay here. For an adrenaline-fuelled experience, book the hour-long Blyde River Canyon helicopter flip.
