Go off-grid and experience a classic safari

Please note: Our review of this property has not yet been added. Watch this space. We're working on it.

As a tailor-made tour operator, we often have to get creative when designing your perfect itinerary.

For example, your travel consultant might add this property to your itinerary if:

Location is a significant factor
It offers a unique feature that will enhance your experience
This is a last-minute booking and room availability is limited
Cost is a factor and you'd rather splash out on another part of your trip
This is a newly opened or refurbished property that we have not inspected yet

When designing your custom itinerary we have much to consider not least of which is the value proposition of every product and service included in your quote. In all cases we strive to give you the best experience possible within your budget so please feel free to ask your travel consultant to share their reasons for including this property in your itinerary.

African safari fans will no doubt be familiar with Jack’s Camp, named after its creator Jack Bousfield, a trend setter in terms of bringing tented luxury to trips out into the Botswana bush.

Well, now, the Bousfield family and their team has opened a second camp in the north of the Okavango Delta, named after Sarefo ‘Duke’ Sarefo, who’s played a key role in caring for and protecting this beautiful wilderness since being born on the island where the camp is now based over 80 years ago.

The new camp

Duke’s is a permanent fixture on the World Heritage Site landscape, 100% solar powered of course, with elevated wooden decks making it easy to explore all that’s sheltered under the leadwood and ebony trees.

The views you get of the floodplains and lagoon when it’s in season are something to behold, and because there’s no Wi-Fi, this is a real chance for you to go off grid for a while.

There are just 12 suites here, so overcrowding will never be a problem. Inside each there’s definitely a classic safari vibe going on, with wood carved four poster beds and Persian rugs dialling up the luxury. Wooden flooring and furnishings with brass fittings in the bathroom are the order of the day. And your private viewing deck gives you a quiet and luxurious area from which to enjoy your surroundings.

Communal areas of camp include a Persian tea-tent, small lounge area and dining tent, with a long table at its centre, around which you can gather with fellow camp members to share your experiences. Expect every mealtime to be an event in its own right, with the camp team bringing out the best crystal and glassware for three-course dinners that feature the finest food and wine.

Afterwards, you have the option to gather around the firepit with a drink for more conversation and perhaps a spot of stargazing, or you could head back to your tent for rest and relaxation.

The activities

Staying here isn’t just about enjoying the views. It’s just as much about getting involved. Experts are ready and waiting to guide your exploration of the areas surrounding camp on morning and afternoon game drives that’ll see you encounter all kinds of wildlife close up. Regular visitors include buffalo, lion, leopard, wild dog, cheetah and herds of elephant, as well as the eye-catching red lechwe and lesser-spotted sitatunga antelope.

The action isn’t all on the ground, however, as sightings of over 350 species of bird have been recorded in the area, including the rare wattled crane, carmine bee-eaters and Pel’s fishing owl.

Speaking of fish, you can fish here too, or gently canoe across the waters in a mokoro. And a sunset boat trip really ought to be on your itinerary, as it’s such a relaxing way to end the day.

Also on the menu – helicopter flights to give you a bird’s eye view of Okavango, and the chance to explore local rock art and find out more about the locals who created it.

Back at camp, there’s a swimming pool and spa treatment area, so you can cool down and relax in style whenever you need to.
