Perched on stilts above the papyrus and reeds of its private concession beside the Moremi Game Reserve, Baines' Lodge has emerged from a major rebuild (completed mid-2025) as an exceptionally intimate and elegant retreat in Botswana’s Okavango Delta
The private concession of the Okavango Delta, where Baines Lodge is set, is a wilderness of floodplains, riverine forest and seasonal lagoons. With no fences to restrict them, animals move freely across this watery landscape – elephants wading through channels, hippos grunting from the shallows, and big cats stalking the grassy plains.
It’s little wonder that guests who stay here return with stories of varied and thrilling encounters, whether from the seat of a safari vehicle, drifting silently on a mokoro or simply gazing out at the wildlife-rich lagoon in front of camp.
Morning and afternoon game drives are the classic choice, and with expert guides and the flexibility of a private concession, you can head off-road to track big game or pause to appreciate the small details. At night, drives reveal the Delta’s nocturnal creatures, while water levels allow for mokoro trips, boat cruises and guided walks. For a bird’s-eye view, book a helicopter flight and watch the channels and islands unfold beneath you.
Baines Lodge has just six open-plan suites, each designed with timber framing, natural tones and wide glass doors that open onto private decks. Inside, four-poster beds, en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, and thoughtful touches such as minibars, Wi-Fi and mosquito nets create a comfortable retreat after your adventures.
The heart of the lodge is its open-air lounge and dining area, where meals are served with sweeping views of the Delta. There’s also an Explorer’s Lounge, a Bush Boutique, and an infinity pool with shaded gazebos overlooking the Boro River. Gather with fellow travellers over sundowners, swap safari tales around the fire, or retreat into a quiet corner to enjoy the stillness. Sustainability is at the core here, with solar power and eco-sensitive design ensuring your stay treads lightly on the environment.
Day and night game drives; walking safaris; mokoro dugout and delta boat water safaris; birding; stargazing.
Water safaris, for which the Okavango Delta is famous, are offered almost all year round with both traditional mekoro dug-out canoes and delta boat safaris available.
Being in a private concession gives you many more options: game drives can extend into the night and you can take guided walking safaris on the islands and the floodplains
Baines Lodge was rebuilt with sustainability at its core. The design uses removable, eco-sensitive timber structures that minimise long-term impact, while suites are raised on stilts to let wildlife pass freely below. Solar power provides most of the energy, backed up by a generator, and communal spaces are cleverly built around natural features like a dormant termite mound. Interiors take inspiration from the Delta’s shifting seasons, blending indoor and outdoor living. Together, these practices ensure Baines Lodge delivers luxury while treading lightly on the Okavango Delta’s fragile ecosystem.
