Nearly one third of Zambia is designated protected wilderness. So camps are few and far between – great news if you want the chance to view wildlife without too many humans spoiling your views or photo bombing your pics.
Anabezi is a family-run camp that’s located furthest east in the Lower Zambezi National Park, a long way from the nearest camp. That means a wealth of wildlife for you to enjoy, many of which will visit the river and surrounding landscape you can see from your accommodation.
The 12 tented suites are arranged around the central camp with views of the river and landscape to enjoy while on a recliner on your private deck (which also boasts a splash pool by the way). You can access your deck through sliding doors from the tented suite, inside of which wooden flooring plays host to a sitting area with sofa and coffee table, plus a teak wood kingsize bed or twin beds. There’s also an ensuite bathroom with a Victorian-style bath – pretty and luxurious.
Raised walkways cut through trees and bushes to get you from your tent to the central camp. This is where you can eat, drink and relax with your fellow guests. Three meals a day plus high tea in the afternoon are prepared by the camp cook and served on the deck, from where you can take in your spectacular surroundings.
You can also head to the bar to watch elephant, hippo, lion or buffalo wash in the river while you wash down your evening meal with a sundowner - perhaps a glass of wine, fresh cocktail, or another of your favourite tipples.
Other facilities here for all to enjoy include a swimming pool, picturesque gardens and a fire pit.
Activities on water and dry land. There’s plenty to do in between waking up for breakfast and finishing off your sundowner in the evening.
Expert guides with patience and experience will take you out on fun and informative day and night game drives. The number of guests in each 4x4 vehicle is limited to four – fewer than most safaris - making the experience more intimate and the views of wildlife that much clearer. And seeing the Big Five is a distinct possibility from here, with leopard and lion sightings frequent, so too buffalo, elephant and hippo.
With the Zambezi and Mushika Rivers nearby, boat trips, canoeing and fishing are all options for camp guests. You’ll likely be sharing the water with hippo and crocodile, so you might prefer to go on a guided trip. Guides will also join you on a walking safari into the Kulefu woodlands which give birdwatchers a chance to capture photos of up to 500 different species of feathered friends, including wattled crane, saddle-billed stork and 5 types of kingfisher.
And plenty of guests choose to end the day stargazing – with the area’s deep black skies offering exceptional views of the constellations.
