Namibia Safari Costs Explained: How to Budget for Your Trip

August 18, 2026

Find out how much a Namibia safari really costs - from 4x4 hire to lodges and flights. Expert budgeting tips for every travel style.

Planning a safari in Namibia? Whether you’re dreaming of a self-drive adventure, a private guided tour or a luxury fly-in safari, understanding what things cost can help you plan realistically and travel with confidence. Namibia may be one of Africa’s best-value destinations, but prices vary widely depending on your travel style, comfort level and time of year.

1. The Biggest Cost Factors

Your safari cost is influenced by:

  • Travel style – self-drive, guided or fly-in.
  • Season – peak season (June–October) vs low (December–March).
  • Accommodation type – camping, mid-range lodges or luxury.
  • Duration and distance – Namibia’s vastness affects fuel and transfer costs.
  • Number of travellers – sharing vehicles and rooms lowers per-person rates.

2. Average Namibia Safari Costs (Per Person, Per Day)

Safari Type Typical Range (ZAR / USD) Includes
Self-Drive Safari ZAR 3 000–8 000 / USD 180–500 4x4 hire, fuel, mid-range lodges, meals
Guided Safari ZAR 7 000–14 000 / USD 430–860 Vehicle, guide, accommodation, most meals
Fly-In Safari ZAR 15 000–40 000 / USD 950–2 470 Charter flights, luxury camps, activities
Camping Safari ZAR 2 500–4 500 / USD 150–280 Campsites, 4x4 with tent, basic meals
(Prices are estimates and vary by season and lodge category)

3. Breakdown of Safari Costs

Accommodation

There is an enormous range. Comfortable guesthouses and simpler lodges can start from around ZAR 1,500–3,000 per room per night, while good safari lodges commonly cost ZAR 3,000–8,000+ per person sharing. High-end, fully inclusive properties can cost ZAR 15,000–35,000+ per person per night in peak season.

Vehicle Hire

Expect ZAR 2 000–4,900 per day for a 4x4, including insurance. Fully equipped camping vehicles and Land Cruisers can reach ZAR/NAD 4,900+ per day in peak season.

Park Fees

Entrance fees apply at national parks and attractions including Etosha and the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Fees vary according to nationality, age and vehicle type, so allow for park and vehicle charges throughout your itinerary.

Meals & Drinks

Most lodges offer half-board or full-board. In towns, expect ZAR 250–450 per meal at a good restaurant.

Flights

International airfares vary significantly according to your departure point and travel dates. Within Namibia, scheduled light-aircraft transfers and charter flights can add substantially to the cost but dramatically reduce travelling time between remote regions. Internal light-aircraft hops ZAR 3 000–6 000 per leg.

Guiding & Activities

Game drives average ZAR 1 000–2 500 per activity; private guides are usually ZAR 2 500+ per day including vehicle.

4. How to Save Without Compromising Experience

  • Travel in shoulder season (April–May, Nov): great weather, fewer crowds, lower rates.
  • Combine camping with lodges – comfort plus savings.
  • Self-drive part of your trip and use guided options for remote regions.
  • Book early to lock in rates – Namibia’s top lodges fill fast.
