Umlani Bushcamp

Please note: Our review of this property has not yet been added. Watch this space. We're working on it.

As a tailor-made tour operator, we often have to get creative when designing your perfect itinerary.

For example, your travel consultant might add this property to your itinerary if:

Location is a significant factor
It offers a unique feature that will enhance your experience
This is a last-minute booking and room availability is limited
Cost is a factor and you'd rather splash out on another part of your trip
This is a newly opened or refurbished property that we have not inspected yet

When designing your custom itinerary we have much to consider not least of which is the value proposition of every product and service included in your quote. In all cases we strive to give you the best experience possible within your budget so please feel free to ask your travel consultant to share their reasons for including this property in your itinerary.

With no fences or electricity, and just 8 traditional thatched huts plus an Eco Hut, Umlani is all about reconnecting with nature – and doing so in quiet, low-impact style.

The camp sits beneath a canopy of trees along the banks of a seasonal riverbed, where open-air communal areas invite relaxed living and connection with fellow travellers and local wildlife, thanks to a deck overlooking the riverbed and nearby watering hole. The atmosphere is laid-back and unpretentious – ideal for those who value experience over frills. Guests pass the heat of the day in the pool, and gather at the bush bar or around the firepit before dinner in the candlelit dining room or under stars in the open riverbed, surrounded by romantic cauldron fires.

Accommodation is simple but charming: each hut is hand-built from natural materials and carefully positioned for privacy. Inside, you’ll find comfortable beds draped with mosquito nets, ensuite open-air bathrooms with a flush toilet and hot-water bush shower, and kerosene lanterns providing a soft glow after dark. Several family huts offer a convenient set-up for those travelling with children, while the Eco Hut offers a more luxurious stay, and the Treehouse makes for a special overnight bush experience.

Days at Umlani revolve around twice-daily game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, which traverse the unfenced wilderness of the Greater Kruger ecosystem. The Timbavati is known for its healthy populations of lion, leopard, and elephant – and with no crowds, sightings often feel exclusive.

Activities

Game drives depart at first light and again in the late afternoon, offering a chance to explore the reserve’s swathes of bush and abundant wildlife, including The Big Five. Experienced guides and local trackers work together to deliver memorable sightings – from lion prides on the hunt to the elusive leopard slinking through the undergrowth. Morning bush walks after breakfast focus on smaller details, such as tracks, insects, birds, and the subtle signs that often go unnoticed from a vehicle. Guests can also visit the treehouse for drinks, or an overnight stay.
