If you’re the kind of person who likes hotel rooms to look and feel the same whichever number’s on the door, staying in the Tintswalo Atlantic in Chapman’s Peak is going to be a bit of a wake up call. Because while the room facilities are similar across all ten, two-person luxury suites (give or take a few key differences here and there highlighted below), each room has its own style of presentation and décor, inspired by the island it’s named after.
Even if themed rooms aren’t your cup of tea - or Nespresso coffee - (both available in your room, by the way) you’re likely to be checking your atlas or world map app to see where exactly in the world the island that inspired the look of your suite is located. Some, like The Sicily Suite, The Antigua or The Corsica are more general knowledge. Others call for a bit more geographic skill. The Ithaca? The Lamu? The Cousine? The Saint-Marie? A gold star for every one you can pinpoint on a map without Google’s help.
In whichever island-named suite you find yourself, the simplicity of the timber and glass outer belies the luxuries that await inside. The bed, for instance, isn’t quite as vast as the Atlantic Ocean it overlooks. But you get the idea – it’s big, and can be arranged as a kingsize or twins if you prefer. The bathroom with its tub and shower also has size on its side and some memorable views too. That’s thanks to the proximity of all suites to the water’s edge, each being raised on stilts but close enough for you to hear the waves lapping against the pebble beach, a relaxing experience whatever time of day you choose to enjoy it.
The list of amenities you’ll find in your suite reads like a who’s who, or more accurately a what’s what of what you’d expect to find in a five-star hotel. Satellite TV. Wi-Fi. Air conditioning. Underfloor heating. A minibar. A wood burning fireplace.
There’s no letting up on the luxury in the communal areas of the hotel either. The dining room, or the Chef’s Warehouse Restaurant as it’s called, is not named after an island it seems. But it does offer up a buffet breakfast and a set three-course dinner, plus the obligatory ocean views.
A pool? Of course there’s a pool, with a luxury sundeck featuring loungers to lounge upon and hammocks to also lounge upon, perhaps with a book in hand as you dry off after your dip. The hotel has a spa too and laundry facilities.
Back to those island suites and the few standout features we promised. If you get the Robben Island Suite, you’ll be staying in the room that pays homage to the first elected President of South Africa – Nelson Mandela – the island being where he was imprisoned for nearly a quarter of a century.
The Zanzibar is the most wheelchair accessible suite in the hotel, while the Cousine has a marine look and feel. The Antigua offers ‘shabby Caribbean chic’ while the Saint Marie is full of feminine charm. Now, where’s that atlas?
