Just a 3.5-hour drive from Cape Town along Route 62, this vast reserve celebrates the heritage of the San people while offering a stunning natural retreat.
Long before human settlement, these plains were home to a diverse array of wildlife. Today, Sanbona is dedicated to reintroducing species that once roamed here through a blend of historical insight and innovative conservation techniques. Our Wildlife Department is actively involved in monitoring and studying the area to achieve a self-sustaining ecological balance for future generations.
Sanbona's conservation efforts include the protection and reintroduction of critically endangered species. The highly elusive riverine rabbit, one of the world's most endangered mammals, is closely monitored to support its recovery. Similarly, we’ve successfully reintroduced desert and southwestern black rhinos to the reserve, species that had been extinct in the region for nearly 200 years. These initiatives underscore the critical role of private reserves in biodiversity conservation.
The reserve features four distinct accommodation options, each offering a unique blend of modern comfort and bush authenticity. The spacious thatched family lodge blends modern comfort with a hint of bush charm. It features interconnecting rooms, indoor and outdoor play areas and a child-friendly pool to accommodate guests of all ages. The lodge also provides educational and recreational wildlife experiences. To unwind after a day of adventures, guests can enjoy the Relaxation Retreat, which includes a wide range of therapies and treatments, as well as a steam room for a serene conclusion to a fun-filled day.
Explore endless open plains, dramatic Cape fold mountains, and ancient San rock art while discovering South Africa’s sought-after wildlife. Sanbona is not just a destination but a commitment to preserving and nurturing the natural world.
Sanbona Wildlife Reserve offers a diverse range of experiences, from nature drives across different biomes and habitats, including the unique quartz fields of the succulent Karoo, to nature walks that reveal the rich fauna, flora, and stunning landscapes of the Little Karoo. Guests can relax in luxury and privacy, enjoy exceptional stargazing with minimal light pollution, and capture breathtaking landscapes through photography. The reserve also features ancient rock art sites dating back over 3,500 years, showcases the Big Five and other wildlife, and provides educational Eco-Explorers programmes for children. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting over 200 bird species within the reserve.
