Set within the Karoo Reserve – 27,000 hectares of restored wilderness near Graaff-Reinet in South Africa’s Eastern Cape – Samara Karoo Lodge offers a malaria-free safari that is shaped as much by conservation and landscape as by wildlife sightings. Spanning five vegetation biomes across plains, mountains and valleys, the family-run reserve has become one of the country’s most significant rewilding projects, bringing back species once lost to the region, including cheetah, elephant, rhino, and lion.
Occupying the reserve’s original homestead beneath the Sneeuberge Mountains, Karoo Lodge blends classic Karoo farmhouse character with contemporary South African design. Wide verandahs, crackling fireplaces and thoughtfully curated interiors create a home-away-from home atmosphere for only 24 guests that feels both refined and deeply connected to the surrounding landscape.
Within the homestead, a collection of inviting shared spaces encourage guests to settle into the slower rhythms of the Karoo. There’s an atmospheric dining room, library, wine cellar, bar and farm-style kitchen, alongside a courtyard planted with indigenous spekboom and aloes. The swimming pool and shaded gazebo overlook expansive lawns framed by mountain views, offering a peaceful space to unwind between activities.
Accommodation comprises 8 standalone Karoo Suites and 2 spacious Karoo Family Suites, all set within the lodge grounds a short walk from the main homestead. Generous in size and filled with natural light, the suites feature fireplaces, air-conditioning, and luxury ensuite bathrooms with outdoor showers, while covered verandahs open onto sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.
Dining is a highlight of the experience, unfolding in ever-changing locations around the lodge and reserve – from fireside dinners in the boma and cosy indoor meals in winter, to scenic bush breakfasts out in the wilderness.
Twice-daily game drives explore Samara’s diverse landscapes, with opportunities to encounter rhino, lion, giraffe, zebra, and numerous antelope species. Guided bush walks, cheetah tracking and wilderness picnics offer a slower perspective, while mountain-top sundowners and star-bed sleepouts showcase the magic of the Karoo after dark. Guests can also enjoy conservation-led experiences, San rock art excursions, spekboom planting, and a special kids’ programme packed with fun activities and inspiring educational experiences for all ages.
Samara Karoo Reserve is a leading example of regenerative tourism in South Africa, with a strong focus on rewilding and restoring the Great Karoo’s natural ecosystems. Rather than simply conserving what remains, Samara actively rebuilds landscapes, reintroduces wildlife and creates long-term conservation impact through low-density tourism.
Overall, Samara’s approach goes beyond sustainability, aiming to create a net positive impact by restoring biodiversity and ecological processes in the Karoo.
