Qorokwe? It translates to the place where buffalo break from the bush and enter the water.
It’s apt, because this camp, located in the southeast of the Okavango Delta, is close to where buffalo roam in herds, trying to keep their distance from their predators, chiefly lion. There’s also plenty of water, the main attraction being the camp’s permanent lagoon and the little water features dotted around and about.
The camp is fully solar powered and reached either via helicopter (seasonal) or with a flight from Maun to a nearby airstrip, from which a half-hour road transfer gets you here.
There’s nothing plain about the plains in this part of the Delta. The prevalence of buffalo herds means that daytime game drives from camp often result in predator sightings, specifically lion, but also hyena, cheetah and wild dog.
You’ve also a good chance of seeing elephant, zebra, wildebeest, antelope, giraffe and other species both on the ground and in the air. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled and binoculars handy for African hawk eagle and ground hornbill, as this part of Botswana is designated an Important Birding Area.
Night drives will more likely reveal leopards in their natural habitat, as well as owls, civet and genet. While guided walking safaris will give you a chance to appreciate some of the smaller species that call the Qorokwe concession home, including kingfisher and frog.
The camp’s lagoon is ripe for mokoro cruises and boat trips, but only during the July to September flood season when the water levels are high enough.
The camp contains 8 large tent-like suites on raised decks, each with private splash pools on a large veranda. The bathroom has a WC, freestanding bath and twin wash basins. But it’s the shower in the ensuite that steals the show, because with the slide of a glass door you can turn it from an indoor feature of your room into an outside shower. It’s worth noting that one of the suites has two bedrooms, ideal for families, and indicative of the welcome extended to children in camp.
The camp’s shared facilities are arranged on raised platforms to give you the best views of the lagoon. There’s a lounge, library, bar and dining room, all connected by wooden walkways. During the day, the infinity pool – which is bigger than many you’ll find in other camps – is popular with guests, while at night, attention turns to the firepit, where people gather to swap stories and enjoy drinks. At mealtimes, the pizza oven gets well used by the team preparing delicious meals for you, which you can enjoy in the dining room, or out under the stars in the boma.
Qorokwe offers a lovely mix of both land- and water-based safari activities, which is one of the reasons it is such a popular camp. Guests can head out on day and night game drives in search of lion, leopard, wild dog and elephant, glide quietly through the channels by mokoro, take a boat trip when water levels allow or join a guided walk for a slower look at the Delta. It is also a superb area for birdwatching, with the concession recognised as an Important Bird Area.
Qorokwe Camp follows a strong eco-conscious model focused on minimising environmental impact while supporting conservation and local communities in the Okavango Delta. As part of Wilderness, sustainability is built into both the camp design and daily operations.
