Khwai Tented Camp is a back-to-the-bush safari camp in a community concession on the edge of Botswana's Moremi Game Reserve.
At Khwai Tented Camp the accommodation is simple, almost rustic, with the bare essentials amply taken care of and the non-essentials removed and discarded. Your room is a large walk-in tent complete with oversize twin beds and a private en suite bathroom.
The bathroom - a private extension of your tent - has a flushing toilet and a hot-water bucket shower with a jug of water supplying your hand basin. In front you have a large shaded patio overlooking the Khwai River.
And that's pretty much it. The living area is much the same as your room open on all sides to the river, the wilderness, the campfire and the incredible starlit night. Morris chairs soak up the cool shade inside and a full complimentary bar hastens the relaxing mood. The food at Khwai Tented Camp is astounding for its ingenuity in such a remote location; in fact it's that good you forget where you are for a moment.
Until the owls hoot, the hyenas yelp and the crickets and frogs get to work with their evening chorus. Even asleep, the deep sleep of a peaceful holiday, you're somehow aware of the wilderness all around you.
And that is the special something about Khwai Tented Camp: it's all natural. From the village down the road, whose residents own and manage the wildlife concession, to the gloriously simple lodgings to the madly enthusiastic guides and camp staff, everything at Khwai Tented Camp is as it was a few decades ago, or, as in the case of the wildlife, the birds and the African bush, as it has been for millennia.
The Khwai Community Concenssion is on the edge of the Moremi Game Reserve making it the frontier between Chobe and the Okavango. The Khwai River and it's flooded plains are the first water source for wildlife moving from the Chobe area and the game viewing here is excellent.
Being in a private reserve gives you much more freedom on your game drives - you can traverse off-road following tracks; and walking safaris, night drives in open vehicles give you an amazing safari experience. Game in the area is rich and diverse with hundreds of bird species, plains game, water-loving animals and good opportunities for the biggies: lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, elephant, hippo, crocodile, giraffe, zebra and the rest.
The guides at Khwai Tented Camp are the home-grown, bush-loving genuine article. They love what they do and their commitment is matched by the welcoming and friendly camp staff.
A visit to the Khwai Village is a must. Escorted and arranged through Khwai Tented Camp, who work together with villagers, you meet the elders and discover a naturally harmonious lifestyle.
