Karangoma

Please note: Our review of this property has not yet been added. Watch this space. We're working on it.

As a tailor-made tour operator, we often have to get creative when designing your perfect itinerary.

For example, your travel consultant might add this property to your itinerary if:

Location is a significant factor
It offers a unique feature that will enhance your experience
This is a last-minute booking and room availability is limited
Cost is a factor and you'd rather splash out on another part of your trip
This is a newly opened or refurbished property that we have not inspected yet

When designing your custom itinerary we have much to consider not least of which is the value proposition of every product and service included in your quote. In all cases we strive to give you the best experience possible within your budget so please feel free to ask your travel consultant to share their reasons for including this property in your itinerary.

Forming part of Wild Expeditions’ portfolio of safari camps that take intrepid travellers on immersive journeys into the remotest pockets of Africa, Karangoma enjoys 30,000 hectares of exclusive terrain on the north-eastern arm of the Okavango Delta. Reaching this wonderfully remote destination is no mean feat, but worth the effort of swooping in by light aircraft to Vumbura Airstrip, followed by a short helicopter trip to the camp.

Built on low wooden decks, six spacious tents – including a family unit with two ensuite tents – are tucked away in a wooded peninsula. Shaded by leadwoods and sausage trees, each tent overlooks the shimmering floodplains and a well-trodden game path to the water. The simple interiors feature references to the iconic Hambukushu basketry of the northern Okavango throughout the bedrooms and lounge, with the adjacent bathroom and indoor and outdoor showers maximising the views.

Interlinking paths on the ground weave through croton and mopane, to make guests feel grounded and connected to the landscape. The dining areas, lounge, firepit and plunge pool all have arresting views across the floodplain, adding to the feeling of being completely immersed in nature.

Rooted in Bukakhwe San and Hambukushu culture, this intimate camp in central Botswana is the result of a partnership with local elder Olatotse Sarefo, and embodies a reconnection with nature and local cultures.

Activities

Karangoma’s spectacular location, overlapping both the floodplains of the Okavango Delta and the woodlands of the sandveld, means that visitors can enjoy an incredible variety of activities. Game drives in a 4x4 and walking safaris afford brilliant sightings of the Okavango Delta’s wildlife – from tsessebe and wildebeest, to elephants and predators such as leopards and cheetahs. In season, you can also glide along the shimmering waterways aboard a mokoro in search of vibrant birdlife. For a different experience, visit the nearby village of Gudigwa to meet the local Bukakhwe San community and gain insight into life in this wild part of the continent.
