A working farm designed to help you enjoy relaxing

Please note: Our review of this property has not yet been added. Watch this space. We're working on it.

As a tailor-made tour operator, we often have to get creative when designing your perfect itinerary.

For example, your travel consultant might add this property to your itinerary if:

Location is a significant factor
It offers a unique feature that will enhance your experience
This is a last-minute booking and room availability is limited
Cost is a factor and you'd rather splash out on another part of your trip
This is a newly opened or refurbished property that we have not inspected yet

When designing your custom itinerary we have much to consider not least of which is the value proposition of every product and service included in your quote. In all cases we strive to give you the best experience possible within your budget so please feel free to ask your travel consultant to share their reasons for including this property in your itinerary.

Back in the day, hippo used to drink from the river that ran through the landscape that now plays host to the De Zeekoe Guest Farm. And although the water has long since dried up, the name – which means ‘hippo waterhole’ – remains. It’s a memorable title for a 3,000 hectare working farm that will let you create memories of your own when you stay here.

The accommodation takes the form of a solar powered B&B guest house with a trio of cottages in the grounds, all located in the heart of Klein Karoo, 7km from Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape. The views of the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains are impressive from here, so too the list of activities available to guests

So much to do – make sure you book enough time

Wildlife encounters play a key role in the activities offered by the farm team. Most guests jump at the chance to see ostrich, as there are many farms in the region where these big birds can be seen in their natural habitat. Other wildlife you’ll get to see on tours of the region include antelope, bat-eared fox, aardvark and porcupine. The Five Shy Meerkat Tour is popular with younger guests.

Older guests are likely to be tempted to spend as much time exploring the wineries as they are spotting wildlife. And De Zeekoe is best placed to make accessing South Africa’s famous Route 62 – the longest wine route in the world – easy.

Other places to visit in the area include Cango Caves to see underground chambers and rock formations as well as Cango Wildlife ranch, where crocodile and alligator are among the species you can view. Mountain biking, horse riding and hiking are  other activities that are popular with guests, with trails extending for between 5km and 30km.

More leisurely pursuits include golfing, fishing, stargazing and birdwatching. Sightings of over 160 different bird species have been recorded in the area.

Where can you stay on the farm?

This is a working farm with almost as many different types of accommodation to choose from as there are animals to see. Whichever type of room you choose, you can expect air conditioning, Wi-Fi and a splendid view through your windows. 6 of the rooms are designated wheelchair accessible. Here’s a brief overview of what’s available:

The Standard Rooms are marketed as being ideal for 1 night B&B stays. They feature either a double or twin beds, an ensuite bathroom and garden views. There’s also a small fridge, handy for keeping your food and drink cool.

The luxury rooms are designed for longer stays. As well as a bed and ensuite, you’ll have a veranda where you can sit and take in the impressive sight of the mountain range. A fridge, plus tea and coffee making facilities will ensure you stay refreshed.

The superior rooms feature balconies, with either views of the gardens or mountains, while the superior honeymoon suites are open plan with a kingsize bed, fireplace, lounge area and ensuite bathroom.

Last, but certainly not least are the deluxe rooms. These have a bed, balcony, a large bathroom with walk-in shower, plus views of the swimming pool.

The Cottages

‍Cottage is a cosy sounding word, isn’t it? And the accommodation at De Zeekoe certainly lives up to the name. There are 3 stone cottages here, all no more than 5 minutes’ drive from the main guest house. As well as a bed and ensuite with shower in each, you get a minibar, tea and coffee making facilities and two fireplaces, inside and out. The views are of the mountains and lake.

Activities

A saltwater swimming pooI gives all guests somewhere to unwind and cool down, with a Tranquility Spa also available for relaxing treatments. When it’s time to refresh, take your seats at a table in the in-house restaurant where breakfast and dinner is served, with fresh farm produce enjoying pride of place on the menu. You can also request a picnic basket of food to take with you for lunch on a day out. The farm also has a cocktail bar where many guests congregate after dinner to share drinks and tales of their adventures.
