If intimacy and seclusion are keywords in your search for the perfect place to safari in Botswana, then Chitabe Lediba is for you. The sister camp of the larger Wilderness Chitabe, it’s located on a tree covered island in the southeastern corner of the Okavango Delta.
There are just 5 tents here, so people will never outnumber the wildlife. And the surrounding grassland, woodland and wetland, together with the Gomoti River, attracts different species of wildlife all year round, so photo opportunities will be plentiful whenever you visit.
Of the handful of tents, two are family friendly (each with two connected ensuite bedrooms), with the other three giving you a choice of twin beds or a double.
All accommodation has wooden floors decorated by attractive rugs, and your tent is elevated above ground to minimise the impact of the camp on the environment, and to give you an excellent view of your surroundings from your private viewing deck. It has comfortable seating from where you can see the comings and goings at the popular waterhole, so be sure to have binoculars and cameras at the ready.
Back inside the tent, you might be interested to know that the toilet flushes and the wash basins come in a pair, just like the walk-in showers, with one inside and the other outside.
When you get hungry, heading for the main timber and thatch lodge will find you the refreshment you need. There’s an open-sided dining area with a single long table, and a self serve bar close by. Take your drinks to the library if you please, there’s an interesting selection of books on the shelves. Or you can choose to take your food and drink to the firepit in the boma and gather around the flames. This is also where the camp team hosts barbecue nights.
Last, but certainly not least, the swimming pool invites you in for a dip any time of day, with sun loungers gathered around it so you can relax and dry off.
Let experts guide you on game viewing expeditions into the local area. These set off from camp both during the day and at night, significantly increasing the variety of the different species you get to see.
The Moremi Game Reserve is to the north of the camp, and you’ve a good chance of seeing four of the Big 5 on your travels, with only rhino a no-show in this part of the world. However, cheetah, zebra and hyena are frequent visitors.
Book a night drive to witness the nocturnal goings on of genet, porcupine and perhaps even pangolin. And if you want to take a closer look at the many species of plants, insects and birds that call this place home, a guided walk is highly recommended (although it’s not available for under 13s). You can, however, book a family helicopter trip for the most panoramic view of the area possible.
Children are welcome to join you in camp, with a special ‘Bush Buddy’ assigned to any 6 to 12 year old to ensure they get to enjoy experiences that match their interests.
At Chitabe Lediba Camp, the safari fun kicks off with morning and afternoon game drives where you’re likely to spot everything from elephants and lions to leopards and wild dogs. Fancy something a bit more adventurous? Head out on a guided bush walk to explore the smaller wonders of the delta on foot. Night drives add a thrill as you search for nocturnal creatures like civets and porcupines. Bird lovers are in for a treat too, with an impressive array of feathered residents. For a unique twist, hop in a helicopter for a bird’s-eye view of the Okavango, or spend some quiet time in the hide watching wildlife come and go – you can even sleep out under the stars if you’re feeling bold!
