This isn’t one of the biggest or most famous places to stay near Victoria Falls, but that doesn’t stop it being one of the best.
In fact, its size could be one of its advantages, especially if you’re looking for somewhere small and snug (there are just 8 rooms and a separate villa here). The entire guesthouse is solar powered and rich with murals, carvings and chandeliers crafted by Zimbabwean artists.
Rooms are booked on a bed and breakfast basis, and it’s unlikely that 528 has ever had a guest who hasn’t visited Victoria Falls, that 100m-high wonder of the natural world.
It’s 3km from the guest house – a walkable distance for some, a short car ride for everyone. 528 is also just 2.5 km from the town of Victoria Falls where you’ll find shops, galleries and a selection of restaurants to provide the other daily meals you’ll need after your guest house breakfast.
All 8 ensuite rooms are air conditioned. 1 is a family suite for 5, another a family room for 4.
There’s also a triple room with the remaining rooms all with either twin beds or a kingsize. All have a writing desk, tea and coffee making facilities and plenty of storage space for your clothing and bags.
The Guest House also has a villa, called The Bungalow. Inside, a lounge with kitchenette, plus 2 ensuite bedrooms. Outside, a private garden. And you get access to all 528’s amenities, which leads us nicely onto…
Let’s start at the top. The Treetops rooftop honesty bar, to be precise, where you help yourself to a wide range of drinks – with or without alcohol – and are trusted to pay whatever they cost. Then you find a seat and soak up views of the Zambezi River and Zambia as you sip.
You can also make use of the indoor lounge area, and will almost certainly visit the dining room for your Continental breakfast. The gardens are ideal for a relaxing walk any time of day, and if it’s hot, a dip in the swimming pool will go down well.
Unsurprisingly, trips to Victoria Falls top the list of most popular activities among guests at 528. You can book a guided tour, head off there yourself, or take to the skies in a helicopter for a bird’s eye view.
But there’s much, much more to do. You can go on safari in a 4 x 4 to the Zambezi National Park and hopefully see elephant, or take a guided walk in the rainforest. It’s also fair to presume that you’ll want to see the David Livingstone statue, which pays homage to the first European to witness the power of the Falls.
Boating on the Zambezi is another option, and a chance to spot crocodile, hippo and waterbirds. For the more active, white water rafting, bungee jumping, kayaking, canoeing, and zip wiring are also on offer.
