Nothing against families, but it was only a matter of time before an adults-only lodge opened in Victoria Falls. And the Shongwe Oasis offers child-free relaxation just 2km from one of the seven wonders of the natural world.
No pitter patter of tiny feet around the multi-tiered swimming pool here then, just a selection of loungers you can relax on before or after a meal in the open air restaurant, or following a massage in the on-site spa.
Aside from the lookout tower (more about that in a minute), the infinity pool is arguably the main attraction at Shongwe Oasis, and you’re sure to see someone sitting in the water sipping a cocktail while smiling – just like you see in countless holiday destination promo brochures.
We reckon that the open air restaurant comes a close second in the popularity steaks, (we mean stakes of course). There’s a focus on local cuisine evident on the menu, although the chef who, at the time of writing was called Jason, isn’t averse to serving up European dishes too.
Completing the trio of top attractions at Shongwe is the spa, small in size, big in reputation. Milk baths, clay wraps, manicures, pedicures and massages are all on offer, so if you’ve got the time, take your pick.
Now to that lookout tower, definitely a unique feature. It provides some essential viewing of the mesmerising mists that rise off Victoria Falls, so it’s worth climbing to the top and taking it all in. You can even order drinks when you’re up there.
Each of the 19 air conditioned rooms will give you a view of the tropical garden and its teak trees. Whether you book a twin, double, triple or honeymoon room, yours will be furnished to a very high standard with different combinations of beds and bed sizes all surrounded by attractive drapes.
There are indoor and outdoor bathrooms in each with twin wash basins. And all beds come with enough pillows and cushions to ensure you can get really comfortable.
There’s no doubting the number one attraction in this part of the world. No one books a stay this close to Victoria Falls without spending time, lots of it, admiring and exploring this globally famous landmark. Whether you sign up for an organised tour or helicopter flight, or you take a look around in your own time, it’s an experience you’re unlikely to ever forget.
Of course, there are other things to do and places to visit during your stay. We’re sure you’ll be searching online to finalise your itinerary, and we reckon Livingstone Island, the Zambezi River, Crocodile Cage Diving, Gorge Swings, White Water Rafting and the Bamba Tram will figure on your list. That’s all on top of the game drives and horseback or walking safaris you’re sure to want to book.
