This is a gentle 3-day guided hike through the Kalahari Desert.
Endless ochre sand dunes scattered with acacias. Vast breathtaking views as far as the eye can see. Peace and tranquility at its finest with nothing else around you but desert-adapted wildlife, a striking blue horizon by day and a dazzling dark sky by night.
Arrive at the lodge after 2pm and, after a briefing from your guide on the hike ahead, spend the afternoon by the pool, watching animals at the waterhole or take a short walk.
As the day draws to a close, find yourself a suitable spot for a sundowner. Enjoy your cold drink with red dune views as the sun salutes the day. After dinner retire to the comfort of your room to get some rest for tomorrow you are off to explore the Kalahari Desert.
You will cover about 18km today so get up early to watch the sun rise and start your full day of walking in the Kalahari. Your luggage will be transported for you so you will only have to carry a light day pack. Stop for a long picnic lunch on a hilltop and siesta during the harshest heat of the day. From here only a few more kilometres to your overnight camp. The hike is fairly easy, the terrain mostly flat with a few low undulating dunes and hard or soft sand tracks. Your guide will help you identify animals including giraffe, zebra, various antelope, bat eared foxes and plenty of birds.
You will arrive mid-afternoon at Dune Camp, your comfortable overnight 'mini-lodge', and have time to enjoy the swimming pool and relax in the shaded lapa area. Choose to sleep in the chalet or outside beneath the stars. Tonight you will have a barbeque dinner around the fire prepared by your private chef. Marvel at the dark night skies, so brilliant it seems unreal and wander off to dreamland listening to the whispers of the wilderness across the Kalahari plains.
Rise early again for sunrise. Enjoy a hearty breakfast while watching wildlife coming to the waterhole before the haze of the desert heat arrives.
The hike back to the lodge is only 6km (or shorter if you require an earlier departure). More endless red sand dunes and breathtaking landscapes in every direction. And more possible animal sightings.
On arrival at the lodge, collect your luggage, take a refreshing swim in the pool or a rinse (shower facilities are available). Ready yourself for your onward journey and bid your guide, the lodge and the astonishing Kalahari Desert farewell.
But wait, you could stay a little longer… stay an extra night at the Red Dunes Lodge, enjoy a lazy lunch and join an afternoon game drive to explore more of this wilderness and to spot more animals.
