Is a self-drive safari suitable for first-time visitors to Africa?

Yes - Namibia is often considered one of the best African countries for first-time self-drivers. Infrastructure is good, routes are clear and travel is intuitive with the right planning.

However, it suits travellers who enjoy independence and are comfortable driving long distances. Most well-planned self-drive itineraries involve 3–5 hours of driving on travel days, with longer stays in key locations to balance things out.

If you’re nervous about unfamiliar conditions or would prefer detailed guidance at every step, a guided safari or fly-in option may be a better fit.
