As rivers go, the Zambezi is a fast-moving body of water. By contrast, this camp built on its banks lets you slow down the pace of life so you can relax and enjoy me-time, you-time, and the time of your life
Its location near the Victoria Falls isn’t the only reason that explains the camp’s popularity. Yes, you’re sure to want to explore that famous wonder of the natural world, but you’ll also be near enough to destinations in Botswana and Namibia as well as Zimbabwe, making this the place to stay if you want to take in the delights of three African countries.
Owned and operated by Africans with strong local knowledge, Zambezi Sands takes pride in its eco-credentials. It’s solar powered with sustainable materials used where practical for the furnishings and fittings you’ll find in your accommodation and the communal areas of camp.
You get eco-friendly luxury inside and outside whichever of the ten Bedouin-style tents is yours. All offer unspoilt views of the river plus private outside space in the form of a balcony or veranda. Some tents even have plunge pools on the deck – presumably you can request one of these when you book.
There’s a seating area inside your canvas retreat, plus a bed which can either be a kingsize, twins or a double as you prefer. All tents have free Wi-Fi, which is not something you get at every safari camp in Africa. Outdoor showers, however, are more commonplace in safari accommodation across the continent, and you’ll get the chance to experience one here, although there is an indoor ensuite bathroom if you’re not feeling quite so brave, or if the weather isn’t suitable.
Most people choose to book all-inclusive here at Zambezi Sands, which means all meals and drinks are included. Whether you choose to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner or a combination of the three, you’re sure to look forward to taking your seats at a table in the restaurant which offers views of the outdoor theatre kitchen so you can watch the chefs working their culinary magic, prepping your picks from a varied menu that lists local and international classics.
After dinner, or before if you prefer, you can gather with other guests around the campfire to share experiences, with a drink from the bar in hand. The lounge provides another place to relax. It has a covered outdoor deck so you can find places to sit in and out of the glare of the African sun.
There’s plenty to draw you away from your luxury tent in and around Zambezi Sands, not least the communal swimming pool by the river. Away from camp, as well as visiting Victoria Falls, you’re bound to want to experience a game drive or two, with hippo particularly prevalent in the wilds nearby. You can also take to the skies in an aeroplane or helicopter tour, or stay on terra firma and join in the guided bush meditations and practices, plus yoga sessions organised by the friendly team in camp. And for massages, you don’t need to leave your tent at all, as one of the team will visit you to deliver your chosen spa treatment.
