An exclusive-use safari homestead in South Africa's largest private reserve.

The Oppenheimer-family-owned Tswalu Kalahari Reserve in the dry, semi-arid southern Kalahari, also known as the ‘Green Kalahari’, is the largest private game reserve in South Africa – with only 50 guests allowed to visit at any one time. Despite its remote setting, the reserve is easily reached via scheduled charter flights from Cape Town or Johannesburg to Tswalu's private airstrip.
Within this setting, tucked into a secluded valley at the Karonnaberg foothills, you’ll find the Oppenheimer’s former private residence, now turned into an exclusive-use safari homestead. Designed for multi-generational families and small groups of up to 10 guests, the contemporary 5-suite property is yours to enjoy, and offers complete privacy.
The earthy yet luxe interiors include a central area with a double-sided fireplace and mezzanine lounge, and a spa treatment room on the same level. The suites lead off to both sides, with a natural flow taking guests onto shaded verandas, a plunge pool, and an outdoor firepit overlooking a watering hole – the perfect spot for morning coffee and post-game drive drinks. A separate tsala offers the perfect hideaway to retreat to.
Fresh, seasonal meals are prepared by a private chef and tailored to guests' preferences, to be enjoyed in a variety of settings, including dinner under the stars at the atmospheric boma.
As an additional experience for up to two adults and two children, guests can also book Malori, Tswalu’s under-canvas sleepout, for a night surrounded by wilderness and wide open skies, and have access to the full Tswalu experience at Motse camp, including a gym, spa, boutique, and photographic studio.
As one of only 3 camps within Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, Tarkuni offers remarkable diversity of wildlife. The reserve is renowned for its famous black-maned lions, desert black rhino, habituated meerkat, cheetah, sable antelope, and rare aardvark and pangolin. With a private guide and tracker at your disposal, itineraries are fully personalised according to your preferences.
Plan your days according to your preferences, from game drives and guided bush walks to habituated meerkat encounters, horseback safaris, and photographic safaris. Guests can also visit the Tswalu Foundation research centre, track endangered species with researchers, explore ancient San rock engravings, and enjoy stargazing in one of South Africa's International Dark Sky Sanctuaries.
