The Cederberg Mountains provide an imposing backdrop to this modern stone-built African farmhouse set in 3,000 hectares of citrus and grape farmland.
Staying next to the Cederberg Wilderness Reserve is a real treat for nature lovers, and the lodge tips more than a nod to its surroundings through its design – think wooden beams, textiles and large French windows. And it’s all barely a two and a half hour drive from Cape Town and the Winelands.
Head to the main lodge for the covered terrace area and dining deck where garden and mountain views are on show, no matter the time of day. This being a farm, much of the produce that makes it onto your plate will be fresh and local, and created using unique techniques.
Those gardens aren’t just for looking at, by the way. You can explore them too, perhaps before or after you’ve taken a dip in the large swimming pool. At the day’s end, you can exchange tales – tall or otherwise – with fellow guests around the fire pit before heading back to your suite or into the library where board games and books await, along with a real fire (if needed) and a smart TV that’s usually showing a sporting event.
The lodge is comprised of 11 rooms and suites at different prices from the classic to the superior and offering views either of the mountains or the courtyard.
Each has a freestanding tub and shower in its ensuite bathroom with underfloor heating. There’s an outdoor shower too on your private stone terrace, and the option in some suites to spend the night outside. This chance to lie down and look up at the stars while sipping something bubbly from a glass certainly qualifies as a romantic experience you’re unlikely to forget in a hurry.
Or you can sleep in more traditional style, in your room’s kingsize bed (which can be converted into twins if you prefer) and perhaps content yourself with stargazing from your window seat, also while sipping from a glass if you so desire. The two superior pool suites have their own plunge pools that are heated by wood burners.
Swimming and stargazing, wine tasting and a pampering in the spa are all available at the lodge. But if you’re looking to spread your wings and explore the local area, the lodge team can help there too. Guided walks and excursions to view ancient rock art are available. So too mountain bike trails, rooibos farm tours and other explorations of Cederberg and the West Coast. In summer, an itinerary of water-based activities splashes into life, with boating, tubing and sunset cruises available.
