Set in the southwest of Botswana’s private Selinda Reserve in northern Botswana, at the intersection of the upper Okavango Delta water system and the famed Selinda Spillway, Okavango Explorers Camp by Great Plains offers a unique combination of two renowned ecosystems.
The remote location gives guests access to some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the region, including lion, leopard, and wild dogs. At the peak of the dry season in late September, more than 9,000 elephants make the river system their home. Shared with only a handful of other lodges, the camp offers an intimate safari experience with few other vehicles, allowing guests to explore a diverse landscape of waterways, grasslands, and woodland. The camp operates almost entirely on solar power and follows Great Plains Conservation's low-impact tourism and conservation principles.
The 6 canvas tents, including 1 family tent, are inspired by the classic African expeditions of the 1920s. Raised on wooden decks, each tent combines traditional safari styling with modern comforts, featuring ensuite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, and private verandas overlooking the floodplains.
The main under canvas area includes an open-sided lounge, bar and dining area, all connected by raised walkways. Meals are served indoors or beneath the stars around the campfire, while the plunge pool provides a welcome place to cool off during the day. The camp accepts children from age 6 and offers a range of specialised experiences and topics, from birding and tracking wildlife to cooking and art.
Morning, afternoon and night game drives explore Selinda Reserve, home to elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, wild dog, and a wide variety of plains game as well as abundant birdlife. Guided walking safaris offer a closer look at the bush, and there’s the opportunity to go canoeing on the Selinda Spillway as it enters the Selinda Reserve from the west, from the upper fringes of the Okavango Delta. Fishing in the Selinda Spillway is possible between March and December, water levels permitting.
