One of first lodges established in northern Botswana, Nxamaseri was built on a densely forested private island. The secluded lodge is surrounded by the permanent waters of the Okavango panhandle, north of where the river fans out into the delta. The airy thatched main area sits in a forest of jackalberry trees – two of which even infiltrate the lounge – and comprises a lounge, dining area, and a small library. There’s also a small pool to cool off in on hot days, and a firepit out front, with a jetty jutting out into the river to welcome arriving guests.
Teak walkways link the main area to 9 tented chalets, set beneath a forest canopy. Made of canvas and thatch, each chalet features an ensuite bathroom, with bedrooms opening up to a private deck from which to enjoy the panhandle water views. And if it’s a chilly night, you’ll find a hot water bottle tucked in under your blanket at night!
The waterways around the lodge offer some of the best fly-fishing in Botswana, and trying to catch one of the area’s indigenous Tiger Fish proves to be a thrilling experience for both pros and novices. The lodge also offers spectacular birding throughout the year, and is the perfect base from which to glide down the river aboard a mokoro. Guided walks are offered on nearby islands, and a full-day trip to the sacred Tsodilo Hills – the cultural heart of the San Bushmen – will give you the chance to see and feel the essence of an ancient culture.
