The biggest herd of elephant in Africa on land in private ownership? You’ll find that here at Mashatu Lodge, in the Tuli region of Botswana, making it a must-visit for fans of those large grey mammals with big ears and tusks.
At the time of writing, the 29,000 hectare Mashatu Private Reserve in the wilds of eastern Botswana is somewhat unspoilt, largely unknown by travellers and tourists.
Elephant won’t be the only wildlife you can capture shots of on your phone, or your proper camera if you’ve got one. Predators including lion, leopard, wild dog and cheetah abound in this part of the world thanks to the free movement of animals between surrounding nations that the area’s commitment to conservation allows. On a guided 4x4 game drive you can also expect to see ostrich and giraffe, and with more than 350 bird species in the skies, keep an eye out for the impressive Kori bustard - Botswana’s national bird.
The 14 air-conditioned suites are located along the perimeter of camp, and all overlook the waterhole that’s the biggest attraction for animals in the area. A double bed with oversized single bed, along with a day bed in the seating area provide the facilities for sleeps and afternoon naps, while the ensuite bathroom has shower, tub and separate WC.
The photographic hide is the place from which you’ll most likely see elephants splashing and kingfishers flying. Other activities the lodge team offer include horse riding, walking safaris, and cycling safaris, all of which you’ll need to book as soon as possible (hint: they’re popular).
However you fill your days, the on-site spa and two large swimming pools will provide welcome relief from the heat when you return to the lodge. You’re likely to want to browse the shelves of the shop of curios at some point, and are sure to find a memento or three to take home for yourself and friends and family. The lodge also has a museum full of historic artefacts that’s a good place to visit when you want a break from the sun.
You’ll be well fed and watered by the lodge’s kitchen team, with an African theme to the dishes, with homemade pies and breads sharing plate space with fresh vegetables and fruits. Food is served in a boma warmed by a fire and open to the skies above.
Mashatu Lodge offers a variety of ways to explore and enjoy the reserve, including morning and afternoon game drives, walking safaris, horse rides and mountain bike excursions. Birdwatching is excellent with more than 350 species, and keen photographers can make use of the well-positioned hides for close-up wildlife viewing. Guests can also join cultural tours, archaeological walks and evening drives to experience the bush after dark.
