You can often gauge how welcome children are at a venue by the facilities that are available for younger guests. Marataba Safari Lodge has plenty, with the Mack & Madi Kids’ Adventure Safari Club providing the focal point of attention for children’s activities.
The club has its own kids’ eco-garden too, full of activities that’ll keep little ones occupied while the grown-ups do grown-up things. Young club members will learn how to camp out in the bush and how to track animals, all from the safety of this lodge garden. There’ll be chances to take part in rock painting, scavenger huts and marshmallow toasting too. And just before bedtime, child-friendly movies are shown out under the stars.
Don’t worry, the team has plenty for you whether or not you have children with you, and whether or not you choose to make the most of the childminding service. You’re sure to appreciate any time spent in and around the pool, and you can arrange for one of the spa treatment team to visit your tent and deliver a massage, body wrap, or facial. Other shared facilities in camp include a dining room and lounge areas.
The camp team organises drives out into the bush for all of the family, so you can share the wonder of seeing all sorts of animals in their natural habitat. Elephant, lion, rhino, leopard and cheetah have all been regularly seen on the reserve, so too buffalo, warthog and hyena.
The camp has its own riverboat called Miss Mara. Everyone aged 6 and over is welcome to climb aboard for a meandering journey down the Matlabas River on a water safari. En route, you’ll likely spot elephant, hippo, and other mammals and birds at the water’s edge, with refreshments served for you humans on board.
Give most people the chance to stay in a treehouse and they’ll jump at the chance. The Thabametsi Treehouse is a solar powered, dual level treehouse offering views of the Waterberg Mountains. It’s a great place for picnics and sundowners, with children aged 6 and over welcome to stay up in the branches with their grown-ups.
Give yourself the best chance of capturing amazing shots of your safari experience by getting tips from a consultant based on-site who knows about photography and can lend you a camera and associated accessories if needed.
The camp is home to 15 luxury air conditioned tents – each with the kind of comfort and luxury you’d expect from a lodge or hotel suite. Made from stone and canvas, the standard size tents feature a king size bed, ensuite bathroom and outdoor shower. The 4 family luxury tents give kids their own bedroom with bunk beds and a bathroom. Toys and games are provided, so too fun things to do when it’s bath time. All tents have a private terrace plus minibar and access to wi-fi.
At Marataba Safari Lodge, you can head out on twice-daily Big Five game drives, join guided bush walks for close-up tracking and flora insights, and take leisurely boat cruises along the Matlabas River for birding and sunset scenery. Photographers can make use of scenic lookouts and waterhole time, while the adventurous can book a night under the stars in the Thabametsi Treehouse. Family activities and relaxed downtime by the pool round off a classic safari day.
