Accommodation is a walk-in tent overlooking the Lufupa River channel. The spacious units have wooden-framed doors, gauze sides with floor-to-ceiling curtains, en suite bathrooms - with hot water showers and flushing toilets - and private game viewing decks with a view of the Kafue National Park in all its remote and rugged beauty.
The decor is classy yet simple, possibly even basic some might say, but who needs pictures on the walls anyway? The view out is far more spectacular. It's rather more about being immersed in nature and when you're in a wildlife area as great as this, being on the deck or out on activities are the highlights anyway.
The riverine setting is typical of the Kafue area. It's untouched and remote, which is basically what you want when on safari in one of the largest national parks in Zambia and in Africa. It's a traditional safari experience that explores the floodplains and as an ideal natural habitat for wildlife and birdlife, ensures you get to see a great variety of both. If leopards are particularly high on your checklist, then you're in the right place here as this spot is renowned for incredible sightings of them along with elephants and of course many others too. If birding is your thing, you're in for treat too. A chance to see over 400 species including Pel's fishing owl, African finfoot and half-collared kingfisher.
Only open from May to January.
Game viewing; night drives; water safaris; birding; guided walking safaris
Game viewing activities in the northern section of the Kafue National Park feature both land and water modes typical of Zambia's safari experience. Game drives in open vehicles extend into the night when the predators and rare smaller mammals get busy. Boating safaris explore the rivers and their channels to reveal hippos, crocodiles, elephant and great variety of birdlife. Walking safaris reveal the detail and intricacy of the Kafue's fascinating ecosystem.
With its rivers, large open expanses of grassland (known locally as dambos), dense riverine forests and broad-leaf woodland floodplains, the Kafue National Park offers a safari of astonishing diversity. The area around Lufupa Tented Camp is known for frequent leopard sightings and the northern region of the park has plenty of elephant and good concentrations of plains game including lion, buffalo, zebra, kudu, impala, roan, sable, puku, hartebeest and waterbuck.
