Sightings of the Big 5 are definitely on the cards when you stay here. And with a name like Leopard Hills, you’d expect that. The spotted cats are frequent visitors to this part of Kruger, along with the elephant, buffalo, rhino and lion that complete the five.
Built on a hill overlooking the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve which extends for as far as the eye can see (65,000 hectares to be precise), the reserve occupies a significant area of the southwest of Kruger National Park. And with no fences between Sabi Sand and Kruger, wildlife is free to roam, increasing the chances of them paying a visit to the natural waterhole and plains you can see with panoramic ease from your suite.
The accent here is on luxury rather than traditional safari, the glass fronts of each of the suites evidence of that. Inside, your comfort is assured, with a lounge area allowing for relaxation out of the glare of the sun, and beds with percale cotton linen, duvets made from down and silk, and puffed up pillows, all enclosed with mosquito netting to stop bugs from biting as you sleep.
You can wake and take a shower indoors or outside, or soak in a classic style bath dipping into the selection of toiletries that’ll help you generate bubbles you can lie back and relax in.
Your private sundeck has loungers, a hammock and plunge pool, and from every conceivable angle you get a good view of the African bush below. That’s why keeping your binoculars within easy reach is always advisable.
The five-star nature of Leopard Hills is confirmed every mealtime by what’s served on your plates and what you sip from your glasses. The food is outstanding and the wine cellar impressive, with views from your table the like of which the very best restaurants in the world cannot match.
Other facilities you’ll share with fellow guests include the gym in a wellness centre which also offers spa treatments you can take in the sala or back in your suite.
The suites might not be classic safari, but the experiences are. They include game viewing in safari vehicles and photographic expeditions hosted by rangers who are expert snappers themselves. It means they can help you capture moments, angles and compositions that’ll impress friends and family back home when you share your pics (yes, the camp has Wi-Fi).
After breakfast, you can lace up your boots and take your place on a walking safari, a chance to get up close and personal with the insects and other smaller species that call the low lying land of this part of the world home.
