The Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, where King’s Camp is located, is separate from the world-famous vastness of Kruger National Park. But only in name. Because there are no fences between the two, which means the incredibly varied wildlife that calls this area home roams free from one reserve to the other (and presumably back again).
It’s small wonder, then, that so many people who stay here report seeing so many different types of wildlife, either out in the bush, on the open savannah, or using the waterhole that’s easily visible from camp.
A bush walk or game drive before breakfast anyone? They’re popular options with guests, with early mornings often the best time to spot wildlife. And with a ranger leading the way and prepared to head off-road to track the big game, the odds of you finding the sometimes elusive Big 5 are that much better.
You can book a thrilling helicopter ride too and look down on the savannah below, or look up to the skies through binoculars during a bird watching session. With over 100 square kilometres of bush to explore ,there’s plenty to do and see, whichever type of transportation you choose.
King’s Camp is home to air conditioned suites, 6 of which sleep two adults in a good degree of luxuriousness with a seventh boasting room for 4 and designated the family suite (also luxurious).
With a thatched roof and dark wood furnishings, your suite has a viewing deck that gives you a unique perspective on your surroundings and chances to view wildlife from a comfy seat a few paces from your double bed, which has a good chance of being a four poster. Your suite has showers inside and out, plus a plunge pool and other handy additions such as a fridge, mini bar and safe.
This self-contained air conditioned unit with lounge area and ensuite showers sleeps 8 people, making it ideal for a family or group of friends. You get a fully, family friendly villa with plenty of space and amenities, plus use of a private vehicle, and access to a private viewing deck.
The camp does all it can to give you chances to meet other guests, although the place is big enough to allow you to keep yourselves to yourselves if you prefer.
When you’re in the mood to mingle with fellow camp mates, there’s a bar that’s ideal for breaking the ice, and a fire pit that’s perfect for gathering around and sharing a tall tale or two. The observation lounge is the place to head to get eyes on any wildlife in the area, and when you’re hungry, you can choose to eat in the dining room, outside on the terrace or within the boma.
Other places you could meet fellow guests include the viewing deck over the watering hole, the gym, library, restaurant, even by or in the swimming pool.
You’re likely to prefer to visit the spa on your own. All that relaxing you’ll do during your stay will almost certainly give you a taste for the laidback lifestyle. And that’s what the spa team is here for, offering all kinds of relaxing treatments that’ll ensure you’re ready for more exploring and even more ‘taking it easy’ time.
At Kings Camp you can explore the Greater Kruger on twice-daily game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, with the chance to spot the Big Five and a variety of other wildlife. Guided bush walks offer a more intimate look at the flora, fauna and tracking skills of the area, while birdwatching is excellent year-round. Cultural visits to nearby communities and pampering at the camp’s spa add variety to your safari days, and photographic opportunities abound from dawn to dusk.
