No one would say that the area surrounding KaingU Lodge is thriving with wildlife. It’s one of the quieter areas of the Kafue National Park, ideal as a gentle introduction to life in this part of the world, before you head into the northern reaches of Zambia’s premier wildlife destination for more regular animal sightings.
The main draw here is the quietness and the tranquil pace of life, both aided and abetted by the beauty of the river. Guests are also attracted to stay here by the mix of land and water-based activities you can take part in, thanks to the lodge’s proximity to the Kafue.
The whole destination is located on a plateau that’s over 1,000 meters above sea level, so there’s nothing wrong with the views. And for anyone planning to visit Victoria Falls either before or after staying here, it’s good to know that the famous wonder of the world is only 400km away.
Green is the dominant colour of the six, open-fronted Meru-style tents with thatched roofs that form the majority of the camp’s accommodation. They’re all on raised wooden decks in a waterside location, and most of them have twin beds, although a couple have a double bed. And because each tent is solar powered, it’s fair to say that they’re green in the sustainability sense too.
Whichever tent you book, you’ll have an ensuite bathroom with shower, and either a tub or shower outside as part of your private deck. You’re sure to appreciate the lighting effect caused by the green bottles that are set into the walls.
Finfoot is the interesting name given to the 2-bed house which offers a bigger place to stay. There’s an inside lounge and outside deck, all of which are a short walk from the main camp and all offering a family or group of friends elegant accommodation overlooking the river.
There are also three campsites within walking distance of the main lodge, each offering shared ablution, cooking and washing facilities.
If you see a large thatched roof, head towards it. That’s the main area of camp where food and drink are served in the dining room, boma and bar, and where lazy times sitting on a deck and squinting through binoculars are enjoyed. It’s all solar powered and Wi-Fi-enabled, with a fire to gather around and a gift shop to find a souvenir or two to take home.
Boat cruises, canoeing, fishing trips and birdwatching expeditions are all offered by the camp team. And it’s just ten minutes by boat to the national park. There’ll be plenty to see on your way and when you get there, with hippo sightings commonplace, so too elephant and crocodile. Leopard are occasionally seen strolling through camp – so you might get lucky and spy them from your veranda. As with all safari camps, you’ll have the option to head out in a 4x4 with an expert ranger taking you to places where you’re most likely to see wildlife. Expeditions leave twice daily, in the early morning and again in the late evening for a night drive. Lion, buffalo and wildebeest have been spotted by lodge guests before, although they are by no means seen in big numbers. The team also offers a walking version of the safari. You’ll cover less distance, and you’ll be looking for smaller species on the ground and in the sky as well admiring rock formations.
