First, the good news. A small percentage of the fee you pay to stay here goes towards local conservation efforts. These are mainly focused on protecting elephant and black rhino populations. Now, the even better news. This camp, which received its first paying guests in May 2026, is set to offer safari enthusiasts looking to head into places rarely frequented by other humans a great base camp.
It’s located in the remote Kaokoland area of northwestern Namibia, where herds of desert-adapted elephant and giraffe reign supreme, and where the landscape is varied enough to offer views of mountains, dunes, riverbeds and coastline.
Accommodation in camp takes the form of 10 air conditioned and fully solar powered rooms – 8 of which are classified as twins, the other 2 family units. They’re all elevated on low-standing wooden decks and built with earthen walls and canvas roofs. That’s important, because that combination offers the best of both worlds in terms of comfort, namely warmth in the winter months, and welcome coolness during the hotter times of year.
All rooms have a private plunge pool as part of a deck area, and an ensuite bathroom with double vanities and showers inside and out. Layouts and structures have been designed to offer you the best views of the desert landscape all around you and the skies above – the sunrises, sunsets and stargazing are pretty spectacular in this part of the world, we’re told, so cameras and binoculars at the ready.
Pathways will lead you from your room to the central area of the camp, where you can eat meals in the dining area, relax in the lounge, see what wildlife you can spot from the outdoor viewing deck, and cool down in the swimming pool. Other facilities include a small spa offering relaxing treatments, and a fire pit with room for guests to sit around and wind down after a busy day’s adventuring in the wilds of northern Namibia.
Spot species that have adapted to desert life. Hoanib is a camp that appeals to those who want to venture to places off the beaten track. The trackers in charge of the daily safari trips that leave camp will oblige, taking you on trails frequented by local wildlife, but not so much by humans in vehicles. On such trips, you’ll be unlucky if you don’t see your fair share of elephant, giraffe and zebra. Desert lions are less frequently spotted in this part of the world, but not unheard of. Herds of springbok, oryx and steenbok are more commonly sighted.Also available are nature walks with expert guides who’ll take you along dry riverbeds, following in the footsteps of black rhino. You can also book a road trip to explore the Skeleton Coast, known for its mighty dunes and plains, bordering the Atlantic Ocean. And the team in camp also arrange visits to see a Himba tribe so you can sample their way of life. While not very active, stargazing is popular in this region as the skies at night are some of the darkest you can see anywhere on the planet.
