An Art Deco and an Edwardian building have been turned into this design-focused boutique hotel, which makes for a striking stay in Cape Town’s CBD (Central Business District). Located on a pedestrian street, the nearest drop-off by car is half a block away – call ahead to ensure porters will come help with your luggage.
As you enter the small reception area (look out for a map of Cape Town, made of blue-and-white ceramic tiles by local artist Lucie de Moyencourt), a plush lift will whisk you up to one of the 32 guest rooms.
From studios to 1- and 2-bedroom suites, the eclectic interiors are inspired by the buildings’ heritage, Victorian elements, and handpicked works of art. Vintage touches such as Marshall bluetooth speakers, Smeg kettles, and retro drink trolleys further add to the atmosphere.
Bathrooms are compact and come with walk-in rain showers and signature amenities, as well as a freestanding bathtub in the 1-bedroom suites. While the hotel does not have a spa, in-room massages and facials are available.
For extended stays, the 3-bedroom penthouse ‘9th on George’ features two ensuite bathrooms, a freestanding bath, two private balconies, and a kitchen. To reach this exclusive sanctuary, take the lift to the 7th floor, followed by a short climb of 40 stairs to reach the 9th floor.
A hotel highlight is Gigi Rooftop, a plant-filled indoor-outdoor oasis that is a favourite with locals, and is also home to the hotel’s small but pretty pool. Open all day, it will take you from breakfast and lunch through to drinks and dinner, with a choice of French and Mediterranean-inspired dishes and excellent cocktails.
The buzzing stalls of Greenmarket Square are around the corner, with foodie Bree Street, colourful Bo-Kaap, and verdant The Company’s Garden also on your doorstep, and attractions such as the V&A Waterfront a short drive away. You can also book tours and day trips through the hotel, including city and Wineland tours, surf and ocean safaris, and seasonal whale watching excursions.tint
