Botswana’s capital surprises many visitors. Gaborone is not a safari destination in the traditional sense – instead it offers a lively mix of modern African city life, pockets of wilderness and easy access to some of the country’s most important cultural and conservation sites.
Set between rolling hills and the wide open plains of southeastern Botswana, the city grew rapidly after independence in 1966 and today is the country’s political and economic centre. Glass-fronted offices and shopping malls sit alongside traditional neighbourhoods and relaxed cafés, while leafy suburbs and small nature reserves soften the urban landscape.
Despite being a capital city, Gaborone has a calm and manageable feel. A short drive from the centre brings you to Gaborone Game Reserve, one of Africa’s few wildlife reserves located within a city. Here visitors can spot zebra, impala, kudu and warthog while birdlife gathers around the reserve’s small dam.
Just beyond the city lies the Mokolodi Nature Reserve, a community-run conservation area known for its rhino tracking experiences and excellent environmental education programmes. Scenic hills, acacia woodland and open grassland provide habitat for giraffe, zebra and a wide variety of bird species.
Culture and history are equally accessible. The Three Dikgosi Monument honours three traditional chiefs who played a key role in Botswana’s early diplomatic history, while the National Museum and Art Gallery offers insight into the country’s heritage, crafts and contemporary art.
While few travellers come to Botswana specifically for the capital, Gaborone serves as a convenient gateway between South Africa and the wild landscapes further north. Spend a night or two here and you’ll find a relaxed introduction to Botswana – a place where modern Africa meets open skies, and where wildlife, culture and city life quietly coexist.
