Namib-Naukluft, home to some of the most jaw-dropping vistas in Africa

Which Vehicle Should You Choose?

Namibia has long gravel roads, remote landscapes and big distances between stops, so the best vehicle is the one that gives you enough space, confidence and support for the journey you have in mind. Whether you’re planning a comfortable self-drive safari, a fully equipped camping trip or a privately guided tour, this guide will help you compare the main vehicle options and decide which one suits your trip best.

Best vehicles for a self-drive safari

For most self-drive safaris in Namibia, a comfortable SUV or 4x4 is the easiest and most practical choice. You’ll have enough space for luggage, good ground clearance for gravel roads and the freedom to travel at your own pace.

Toyota Fortuner
The Toyota Fortuner is a popular choice for self-drive travel in Namibia. It is comfortable, practical and well suited to most classic Namibia routes, including Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland and Etosha.
Best for:
couples, small families, first-time visitors, classic self-drive routes and travellers who want comfort without going over the top
Why choose it:
It gives you a good balance of space, comfort and value. It is easier to handle than a larger safari vehicle, while still being suitable for long-distance travel on gravel roads.
Things to consider:
If you have a lot of luggage or want extra comfort, the Prado may be a better fit.

Toyota Prado
The Toyota Prado is a step up in comfort and space. It is ideal for travellers who want a smoother, more refined self-drive experience, especially on longer itineraries.
Best for:
couples wanting extra comfort, families, longer trips, higher-end self-drive safaris and guests who prefer more space
Why choose it:
It offers comfort, reliability and excellent road performance, making it a strong choice for longer Namibia journeys.
Things to consider:
It is usually a more premium option than the Fortuner, so it may not be necessary for shorter or more budget-conscious trips.
