Namib-Naukluft, home to some of the most jaw-dropping vistas in Africa

Which Vehicle Should You Choose?

Namibia has long gravel roads, remote landscapes and big distances between stops, so the best vehicle is the one that gives you enough space, confidence and support for the journey you have in mind. Whether you’re planning a comfortable self-drive safari, a fully equipped camping trip or a privately guided tour, this guide will help you compare the main vehicle options and decide which one suits your trip best.

Best vehicles for a self-drive safari

For most self-drive safaris in Namibia, a comfortable SUV or 4x4 is the easiest and most practical choice. You’ll have enough space for luggage, good ground clearance for gravel roads and the freedom to travel at your own pace.
The Toyota Fortuner is a popular choice for self-drive travel in Namibia. It is comfortable, practical and well suited to most classic Namibia routes, including Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland and Etosha.
Best for: couples, small families, first-time visitors, classic self-drive routes and travellers who want comfort without going over the top
Why choose it: It gives you a good balance of space, comfort and value. It is easier to handle than a larger safari vehicle, while still being suitable for long-distance travel on gravel roads.
Things to consider: If you are travelling with a larger family, need more passenger space or would prefer a vehicle designed for guided safari travel, the 6/7-seater safari vehicle may be a better fit. It is less comfortable than the Fortuner, but with large windows and a pop-up roof, it is especially well suited to game viewing and photography.
The 6/7-seater safari vehicle is a good option for small groups, families, private safaris, photographers and self-drive game drives where visibility matters. With large windows and a pop-up roof, it offers excellent game-viewing and photography opportunities.
Best for: families, small groups, private guided safaris and guests who want more safari-style viewing than a standard SUV
Why choose it: It offers more passenger space and better visibility than a standard rental vehicle, while still feeling manageable for smaller groups.
Things to consider: It is less comfortable than a Fortuner and is generally better suited to guided safaris or dedicated game-viewing routes than long self-drive touring days.

Best vehicles for a camping safari

If you want to sleep under the stars and enjoy Namibia’s campsites, a fully equipped 4x4 camping vehicle is the way to go. These vehicles are designed for self-sufficient travel and come with rooftop tents and camping equipment. The main choice is between a Toyota Hilux Double Cab and a Toyota Land Cruiser Double Cab. Both can be equipped for either 2 or 4 passengers, but they suit slightly different travel styles.
The Toyota Hilux Double Cab is a practical and popular choice for a self-drive camping safari in Namibia. Available in both 2-pax and 4-pax camping setups, it offers everything you need for an adventurous, flexible and budget-conscious camping trip.
Best for: couples, families or friends who want a fully equipped camping vehicle without choosing the largest or most expensive option
Why choose it: It is reliable, practical and well suited to Namibia’s classic self-drive camping routes. The Hilux is a good option if you want the freedom of camping, but still want a vehicle that feels manageable and easy to drive.
Things to consider: It has less space than the Land Cruiser Double Cab, especially when travelling as four people with luggage and camping equipment. For longer trips, families or travellers who want more comfort and packing space, the Land Cruiser may be a better fit.
The Toyota Land Cruiser Double Cab is a larger, heavier-duty camping vehicle with more space and comfort than the Hilux. Available in both 2-pax and 4-pax camping setups, it is a good choice for travellers who want a more spacious and premium camping experience.
Best for: families, longer camping trips, travellers with more luggage and guests who want extra space, comfort and a more substantial 4x4 vehicle
Why choose it: It gives you more room for passengers, luggage and camping equipment, which can make a big difference on longer Namibia routes. It feels more spacious than the Hilux and is well suited to travellers who want a tougher, more comfortable camping vehicle.
Things to consider: It is larger, heavier and more expensive than the Hilux. If you are travelling as a couple, packing light or trying to keep costs down, the Hilux may be the more practical choice.

Best vehicles for a guided safari

If you prefer to travel with a guide, one of our safari vehicles is usually the best choice. These vehicles are designed for visibility, space and comfort on long safari routes.
The 9-seater safari vehicle is ideal for medium-sized guided groups. It offers generous space, good visibility and a pop-up roof for wildlife viewing and photography.
Best for: guided safari groups, families travelling together, photographers and small tour groups
Why choose it: The higher seating and safari conversion make a big difference in places like Etosha, Damaraland and the Caprivi/Zambezi Region.
Things to consider: This is a larger vehicle and is only available for guided safaris.
The 11-seater safari vehicle works well for larger private guided groups or scheduled group tours. It allows the group to travel together while still having safari-style visibility, and a luggage storage trailer is available for trips that need extra packing space.
Best for: larger guided groups, family groups and scheduled safaris
Why choose it: It is practical for moving a group comfortably across long distances while still allowing good wildlife viewing.
Things to consider: For smaller groups, a 6/7-seater or 9-seater may feel more comfortable.
