The Winchester is a 4-star, 3-storey, 1920s Cape Dutch style property that’s hard to miss and easy to enjoy.
Its façade makes quite the impression on the palm tree-lined Sea Point Promenade coastal road, especially when lit at night. And the rooms within offer views of Table Mountain, the Atlantic Ocean or the courtyard, with options to suit all budgets.
It’s a big place, The Winchester, with all styles and sizes of room. If you’re looking for great value, try a loft room. At the other end of the budget scale, the Luxury Balcony Suites with sea views come highly recommended.
Whatever you choose, inside your air conditioned space, you can expect to find a large double bed, satellite TV, cushioned armchairs, and plenty of storage space for your clothing and bags. Amenities include a mini-bar, tea and coffee making facilities and a safe for your valuables and passports. Your ensuite bathroom has a WC, wash basin and walk-in shower with some of the more expensive rooms offering a separate bath tub too.
The small and square swimming pool is certainly a major draw at The Winchester. It’s surrounded by decking on which you can arrange your lounger to face your desired direction. Elsewhere, there’s a beautiful courtyard where you can take your meals, a gym, tennis court, and a Sanctuary Signature Spa.
There are several lounges you can relax in and restaurants you can refresh in, serving buffet or a la carte South African meals with a European twist daily, with many dishes cooked on an open fire. The bar is located in a part of the hotel where you can enjoy your drink while watching the sun set over the Atlantic and people watch those walking along the promenade. And if you’re around on Sundays, you can enjoy a jazz brunch with live performers keeping you entertained as you eat and drink.
The promenade on which the Winchester is located, is nearly 4 miles long and popular with local runners, cyclists, skaters and dog walkers. And tourists too, of course. At one end, you can reach the Mouille Point Lighthouse, at the other the beaches. The hotel operates a free shuttle service from the main entrance to the V&A Waterfront (it takes around 5 minutes) where there’s an aquarium, maritime museum, galleries and shops. You can also catch a ferry to the world famous Robben Island.
