Forming part of Phinda Private Game Reserve’s 29,866 hectares of protected wildlife, Phinda Forest Lodge is home to The Big Five and more than 400 bird species. As custodian of one of the continent’s most distinctive and delicate ecosystems, the endangered Sand Forest, a stay at this eco lodge gives guests access to a unique safari experience.
Phinda offers a great variety of wildlife across 7 distinct habitats, with limited numbers of vehicles ensuring an exclusive game drive experience. Home to The Big Five, the region is especially renowned for its large population of cheetah and black rhino, as well as suni and red duiker – two tiny antelope seldom seen elsewhere.
Recently re-envisioned, the lodge’s 16 Zulu-Zen-inspired suites sit under a dense tree canopy and seem to float on stilts, with uninterrupted forest views from private verandas. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls allow a natural indoor-outdoor flow, making you feel at one with your surroundings. A new family suite comprises two suites, with childminders available on request – making this a great family option within the malaria-free reserve.
Featuring a lounge and gallery, central Zulu-inspired bar counter, wine cellar, and interactive kitchen, the public areas are dotted with an impressive collection of South African artworks. In-between game drives, guests can lounge by the rim-flow pool and sundeck, with plenty of opportunities to spot resident wildlife across the open vlei. Those looking for further activities can work out in the state-of-the-art gym or indulge in a Healing Earth spa treatment .
Inspired by the dark-backed weaver bird’s home, the central firepit makes for the perfect pre-dinner spot – sip on a glass of wine or a G&T and swap stories with your fellow travellers. Dinner itself might take place at the lodge or in a secluded lantern-lit bush location.
Daily game drives can be arranged according to interest, from family and private safaris to birding and photographic outings. Guests can also opt for specialist walking and tracking safaris, and a thrilling sleepout under an open sky. Those interested in conservation might wish to join rhino notching or pangolin tagging experiences, while children can take part in the specially curated WILDchild programme. Additionally, the lodge offers Zulu village and community visits – with Maputaland beach trips, seasonal night turtle drives, and scuba and ocean safaris also available.
