The ocean. More ancient than the mountains. The place where life began. And home to the majority of the worlds plants and animals. Planet Earth has five of these great seas. And the Atlantic is the saltiest of them all. But do gaze at it. Be inspired, feel peaceful and for once just live, really live, in the glorious moment. And when you want to go to bed, well, why not sleep right there. Amongst the sand dunes of the Atlantic seashore. Prefer a bed? Then look over your shoulder. That's the Paternoster Dunes Boutique. If it was any closer to the water's edge it would be a boat. Or a very wet guest house.
You'll also have private access to a beautiful patch of indigenous Strandveld, which leads directly onto Bek Bay Beach. This type of Cape Strandveld is endemic to the coastal areas around Cape Town. Strandveld means 'beach scrub' in Afrikaans and it covers and stabilises the sand dunes. It's also incredibly colourful in spring when it bursts into flower. And it supports a very high biomass of browsing animals.
One thing to note, no children under the age of 9 are permitted.
6 guest rooms, all with en suite. Some even have direct access to the beach which is a rather superb touch... and all have a sea view. There is also a self catering cottage available.
The Breeze Room, Salt Room and the Aqua Room all have a deluxe king size bed or twin beds are available. They're lower level rooms with a private terrace looking out to sea.
The Mist Room has a luxury queen sized bed. This is on the upper level and is sea facing.
The Tranquil Room has a superior king sized bed or twins are available. The entrance is off the courtyard / pool area. It on the lower level and has a private sea facing patio to the side of the guesthouse.
The Boulders Suite has a luxury king sized bed or twin beds are available. This is on the upper level and has partial sea views from the bedroom. A lounge, kitchenette and private patio. There is also a private exterior staircase entrance.
Dune Ridge Cottage is available for two people and is self catering. It's all fisherman chic with its open-plan layout and stone finish. Not sure if fishermen have ever been chic but maybe they are here? Anyway, it's light, airy and stylish. There are uninterrupted sea views and the guesthouse is 600 metres away. You can go for breakfast at the guesthouse as an extra treat. King or twin beds. Free-standing bath and walk-in shower. There's a docking station, patio with braai facility, free WiFi and full DStv.
Walk along the beach, explore Paternoster or simply chill out. Many leisure activities available in the area including sea kayaking, kite surfing, fishing and golf. You could also browse the art gallery, brewery, pottery studios and glass studio.
You could check out Columbine Nature Reserve to discover indigenous flora and fauna.
Or head to the Cape Columbine lighthouse. It was built in 1936 and is the last coastal beacon to have a dedicated keeper.
Go kayaking to spot penguins and sea birds. Or wander to the Greater Paternoster Nature Reserve.
Try kite surfing, horse riding, dolphin spotting.
The other big option is wine tasting. The West Coast Wine Route is nearby.
