Canvas tents flapping in a cooling morning breeze. Flickering lanterns on raised platforms lighting up your accommodation after sundown. And always the sights and sounds of the wild just a few paces away. That’s the beauty of the family-run Ngama Tented Safari Lodge. It’s a permanent camp built to blend into a part of the world that always seems to attract the sun and gives you an authentic African safari experience with exceptional service.
There are just 6 treehouse-style chalets here, each with an ensuite bathroom, outdoor shower and a terrace with comfortable chairs and great views. You also have the option of booking the Bush House, a private home for up to 8 where a family or group of friends can stay together on a self-catering basis and enjoy each other’s company, and all the area has to offer.
Camp facilities that are shared with other guests include a swimming pool with sundeck, boma with fireplace, and another viewing terrace on which you can enjoy meals (with breakfast and dinner charged on top of your booking fee). The waterhole is in full view of camp, and always an attraction for various species of wildlife.
A massage tent set away from the rest of camp offers treatments that will leave you feeling a real sense of calm and relaxation.
Ngama, which translates into English as ‘place of the eagles,’ is the perfect base for exploring the Guernsey Private Nature Reserve, Kruger National Park and Thornybush.
Located on Lowveld Plain in Limpopo, from here you can head out to the town of Hoedspruit, to the Endangered Species Centre or Khamai Reptile Park, or on walks and guided safari drives in the early morning or late afternoon daily. But the real clincher for most guests is the good to excellent chance you have of spotting the Big 5, as well as crocodile, hippo, zebra and more.
Hiking is also popular, so too horse riding, the Canyon Adventure Centre and cruises along the river to the Blyde Dam. And few can resist the chance of enjoying a bird’s eye view of the surrounding area up in a hot air balloon. Among the sights to see are God’s Window, Blyde River Canyon (the world’s third largest) and Bourke’s Luck Potholes.
