De Hoop is considered to be one of the best places in South Africa to see southern right whales between July and the end of September – with sightings also possible from June to early November. The reserve is also home to dolphins, sharks, and seals, as well as the bontebok, Cape Mountain zebra, and a thriving bird population, plus a fynbos floral kingdom that comprises 1,500 plant species.
